When were Balrogs ever cannon fodder? In all recorded battles with a Balrog the person died, sometimes the Balrog did too but not always.
Gandolf died fighting the Balrog of Moria/Khazad-dum in Fellowship of the Ring.(Also seen in the movie version of the Two Towers)
Not that Smokey The Balrog is that kind of ill-mannered Balrog mind you.

Nah, nah, meant the whole Gandalf thingy. I miss-spelled Gandalf in my post?!?! Argh! :D
Maybe I was thinking of Goodgulf. Dryad have you read Bored of the Ring?
And I believe Belegaer is more to the West of Gondor and south of Eriador. :p
Valier
Queens of the Valar
Is it just me or does the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales makes the Lord of the Rings seem cheerful.

Mayhaps ya was tinkin' 'o Rudolph:yuc: & never heard 'o
bored 'o da rings..........though south of Eriador tis NW 'o
Gondor.......according to War in Middle Earth Map c.1989
And tongue in cheek humor far exceeds John Ronald Rauels
later jewels of future depression............
