  • computer randomly shuts down

    Hi,
I'm having some trouble with my computer that I built. I built it about a month ago, and it was working fine until now. For some reason, ever since yestraday, it just shuts down on me suddenly and without warning. It happened four times so far, and the intervals between the shut downs are different (5 minutes to an hour or so). I dont know if its a power supply issue because the mobo lights are still on. Its 450 watts too, but maybe its bad quality. I'd just like to know if anyone knows what might be causing this or has experienced anything similar. Maybe I knocked something out of place or some other such thing. My speakers and monitor and everything still stays turned on, though. Thanks a bunch beforehand :)

We can't help you without more information. Please provide full system specifications (including the manufacturer of the PSU) and what operating system you're using.

      Re: computer randomly shuts down

      sry, here are my specs:
      AMD Athlon 64 3200+
      ASUS K8V SE Deluxe mobo
      Kingston 2 x 512 mb RAM
      Radeon 9800 Pro 256 megs
and my power supply just came with the case, its says Turbo Power... Im not sure what my case it, but the side fan has Powmax on it, so maybe that's it...
I checked everything inside, and it seems to be in order. I really dont know what to do. It is possible that its the power supply?
I can't boot it up using the regular button either.. i have to restart the power.
oh, and I'm using Windows XP professional, with SP 2.

Tell us what kind of RAMs you got. Maybe the speed is too low and the ram is being stressed too much. Another thing, try another hdd. I had a hdd that turns itself off when it gets too hot before.

          Re: computer randomly shuts down

Two things come to my attention:

          A generic case power supply.
This is very likely to be the problem. I'd suggest you replace it with a good 400W or better from a good brand name. I'd recommend Thermaltake or Antec. Also, you may not have some cables on the inside hooked up properly if the power button doesn't work. If not, then it is almost surely a PSU issue.

          Service Pack 2.
While I've haven't heard of it causing problems this severe, it's quite possible. In fact, if you managed to get you Security center spoofed, you could have a serious virus issue right now. Get HiJackThis from my signature and post the log.

Your problem is likely to do with SP2, http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;878474
Did this start after you installed SP2?

I can assure you that there is nothing "turbo" about that psu. Try a decent one.

Yeah, read the MS KB article Wayout linked to. SP2 may be the problem. If not, PSU is still a possibility.

Its the obvious, but everything is cooled down to an acceptable tempreture yeh?

Oh, and power supplies are a vital piece of hardware! Never try to save money on a PSU, always buy the best you can afford :)
