  • Computer freezes during games

Recently I purchased a new SATA DVD drive along with a new WD caviar green 1TB hard drive. At first I was getting a lot of bluescreens but I found out it was an issue with the dvd drive and my nvidia drivers. So I have the dvd drive unplugged and haven't had any more bluescreens but now whenever I play a game it freezes. Usually within a few minutes of me starting the game it happens. I updated to the latest nvidia drivers but still have the same problem.
I never had any problems like this before I added the harddrive so I'm guessing it might be something to do with that. Also I dont have any type of cd-rom plugged in atm but that shouldnt be a problem should it?

    NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GTX+
    Intel dual core e6600
    ASUS P5N-D
    2gb corsair DDR2 800
    WD Caviar green 1TB
    WD 130gb drive
    600W power supply i think
    Creative soundcard
2 antec 3speed fans --- its not an issue of overheating

Ok Might need a little more info, What OS are you running? Is the OS on this new WD 1TB Drive? How did you do it? Was it a clone or a fresh install? The first thing you should do is run Memtest 86+ v2.11 http://www.memtest.org/download/2.11...+-2.11.iso.zip and let it run for several hours + lets say atleast 4 passes on your ram. I would also perhaps reseat your ram as you may have knocked it maybe when you were changing drives and stuff, and reseat your Video card to. (Both with power off) But run memtest after that and see what happens. Then if that is all good and you still have problems you could run seatools Seagate Registration - SeaTools Disc Diagnostic

      thanks for the reply..
I'm using windows XP professional service pack 3. I installed my new harddrive following this article...basically I didn't touch my old hard drive and just set up the new one for storage using the Disk Management tool. So windows still boots off the old HD. All of my games freeze though, regardless of whether they run off the old HD or the new one.
I will try to let the memtest run overnight.

There really is no reason that adding an "Additional" storage drive would cause these errors. have you tried running these games without the New HDD plugged in? Try reseating your ram and video card also. If all else fails Get an ATI Video Card. lol. Jokes but that solved my problems with my 8800GT

Maybe it wasn't your CD rom drive causing your blue screens in the first place. Could be that your original drive is causing the problems and is about ready to die. Do you get any codes? If so Google search.

                Re: Computer freezes during games

                both ntfs?
defrag both n clear their recycle bins.
turn off smart drive on both see if that makes any diff.
Use driver sweeper or similar to clear out all the old nvidia stuff.
Use a utility like rivatuner to check that all the loadednvidia drivers are the same version number.
Use dxdiag (in run program box) to maxe sure dx is running properly.
