  • Northbridge fan died

    hey whatsup everyone,

friend of mine has a MSI kt400-ultra he got from newegg prlly about a year ago, and the northbridge fan is whacking out -- most of the time it is not running and when leaving the comp on overnight, it reboots and suspends.. is it easy to replace a northrbidge fan (never did it, not sure how its connected), or should i try and RMA it, (think newegg will do it after that long)?

    thanks alot guy

Newegg only warrants purchases and does RMA requests within 30 days. He's out of luck.

The Northbridge should not need a fan, most of them use just a heatsink and work just fine. However if you want a new one there are several companies that make aftermarket ones such as the Vantec Iceberg.

Yes it is easy so just find a suitable replacement fan (or better if possible) but the red wire is 12v+ (yellow PSU wire) and the black is 12v- (black wire beside the yellow PSU wire) and if the fan has a yellow or white wire then this is the monitorin' wire. If this is just the standard sleeve bearin' 40mm x 10mm fan then look for a 40mm x 15mm ballbearin' fan as this will not only cool better (more cfm) but last longer as well though a touch louder to some ears (a lot of early mobo's used sleeve bearin' fans which died quickly).
