Put a 800fsb into a motherboard that supports 533fsb

Hello,

I have an ASUS P4PE motherboard that supports a 533mhz fsb. I have a friend who has a faster processor that he wants to sell me. It is a 3.0ghz P4, with 800mhz fsb. Will this work for me?

I would have to say no it would not support it. Even if it did, it would be downclocked to 533FSB and it would also lose speed. Just not worthwhile. Besides, you wouldn't see a huge gain in performance going from 533 to 800.

I forgot to mention that my processor is 2.4ghz and the new one is 3.0ghz. Would it be worth it to try it out? Would I hurt anything trying it?

I cannot see what could be harmed. It will either fail to post or it will just not be compatible. You could probably save yourself some time/money and just get a quality heatsink/fan combo for your 2.4GHz CPU and overclock it past the 3GHz mark anyways.

The chip is not supported by the board, if it did run (which I very much doubt) it would run at 533 as casecutter has said, the downside is you could possibly blow the board, chip or both.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like the suggestion of getting a quality heatsink and fan and overclocking will help. I'll do some research on the boards. Any recommendations off hand?

If you can find one the P4C800E Deluxe is a good board (i875 chipset) or a P4P800 (i865 chipset), of course there are other brands but I tend to stick with Asus.

I'm still running a P4PE as the family pc btw, not a bad little board though the chipset heatsink retention brackets pulled out of the board and I had to use epoxy thermal glue to stick it back.

if the chip is socket 478 then go with the p4p800 se mother board from ASUS very good mother board and overclocker.
