  • UPS/Voltage Regulator?

I was chatting with a fellow PC enthusiast not long ago, and he stated that in our rural area, harddrives go out prematurely due to inconsistent voltage output by the power company...he was also trying to sell me a UPS with a voltage regulator to "fix" the problem. Well, I found a deal on one (for much cheaper...he he he), and despite his claim, I like having the backup. I just want to know....was he full of it? Anyone else ever hear of or experience this problem? I have no way to measure the power here to see if it's true. : peace:

Voltage sags can shorten the life of components as they draw more current and generate more heat at lower voltages. A good ups with AVR (automatic voltage regulation) is a good investment. It also provides surge protection as well as battery backup and all but the cheapest support auto save and shutdown in the event of a power loss. Remember that these are heavy units and sometimes have a high shipping cost. Some good names are APC and Tripplite.
