  • missing older files after packet writing?

Well I think this is the right place for this since a windows feature did it. I burn lots of cd's, over 5 a day sometimes. I continued a compilation with windows burning and the old content is gone. Very bad as the old content is family pics. I know the data is still on the disc, it's just not showing up in the dir with the new files.(it's a cdr)

Does anyone know how to recover it? This has never happened to me before.

You could try installing the demo of Nero and see if you are able to find your files using it.

I've never heard of that happening before.....

I have a real copy of nero. I use it all the time. And as for the windows/roxio burning, after over 500 disc's, this is the first and only problem I have ever had. And the addability and universality between different machines makes it worth the 1/500 error ratio. Can't say any burning program spit out less coasters than that. The burning engine got bugged up by easy cd&dvd creator 6 that I needed to burn one thing and uninstalled it. Now it only burns at 8x instead of 32x. I'm in the last (slow) stages of backup, then the new 80gig goes in.

Anyway, I think it got confused and replaced(somehow) instead of adding which is odd because the names were different. Being a cdr, the info is still there, just not refered to in the dir anymore. Someone has to know of a recovery tool.

I have had this thing bugging me lot of times. i try something like this

          1. try reducing the READ speed of your CD-ROM/CD-RW drive to around half or even quarter of what it is by using NERO Drive Speed tool and try again.
          2. try and use a software like ISOBuster to get your data back.

Thanx asklepios. ISO buster found everything right away and recovered it instantly. Still have no idea why it was treated as a new cd.

my best guess would be those checked boxes saying "Replace/Add files" when you continue with multisessions disks.
if nero does not find the files from where it wrote them in first place, it might think that you don't want them anymore and mark them as deleted on CD.
these so-called deleted files will be there on the CD (since it is just a CD-ROM) but you will be unable to see them. atleast this is what happened with me.

This happened with xp drag n drop burning. It was the 5th session that overwrote the dir. Even the free space is wrong, its's as if it was a new cd again. Isobuster sees all. And after the new hd, burning is normal at 32x again. I think other stuff was screwed up with the burning engine as well, causing stuff like this. As a precaution, I got all the data off the disc and tossed it.
The reason I was so freaked was my longhorn screenshots and pics from when I tested it were on there without a dir.

                edit:
                Brainstorm
That disc was added to with longhorn. That may be why after all. But that was session 3, and it did not happen until 5.
