New Drive with Old Drive as Slave to retrieve Data

Installed Windows XP Pro on new 80gig 7200rpm ata133 w/8meg cache. Took old drive and put in on as a slave to retrieve data.

Problem:
I can't access my documents and settings to retrieve some of my old data. Any Ideas?

you can't see the drive? can you access other data?
wat is the error you are getting?
a little more details would be helpful.

did you change the jumpers on the old drive when you moved it to slave? it's an easy thing to forget.

Possible causes.

1. you had a password on your old system and you made the files private.

2. Your not looking in the right place for documents, try a search

3. HD got wiped in the upgrade process - usuall cause of this is user

4. The drive hasn't been given a drive letter - right click on my computer, manage, drive management. - mainly occurs in win2003

Generally your system won't boot if you've done this.

Actually this isnt true because I've booted my system up quite a few times checking other drives as slaves and didnt get the pins in the right place and the drive just doesnt show but the system boots up normally.

and this could be an exception, it's happened to me a couple times now. Maybe I just some wierd kind of luck, or something :shrug:

I can see the drive and the data, but when I try and copy or open the file I get an error. I will have to get back to you on the error because this system is one I built for a buddy and he at the Grand Canyon.

It has to be a password or some policy BS.... had winxp Home and I put winxp pro on the new drive. I attached the old drive as a slave so he could retrieve music and documents. Can't get into his My Documents folder... I will post error message as soon as he get back.
