Ok, this is strange. With xp pro, just after getting to first desktop after install, a window pops up and says. "nt protection has to shutdown windows", then it starts a timer at 60sec. I played with this, reformatting 3 times and trying every trick in the book before giving up. The solution was to stick 98se in there, then do an upgrade.
My theory about why this fixed it is because there is no nt protection with fat32.
The machine performes just as well as the other exact same rigs now that it is working. Even though every other one (like over 20) worked just fine with a full install of xp on ntfs file system.
Any idea what would or could cause this, or how to actually fix it without the need to revert to fat32?
All these rigs have as follows:
xp2000, xp2200, or xp2400
ecs k7s5a pro v5 (this one is the newest version yet with a bios dated nov 2003), newest sis drivers available.
light on dvd-rom
512mb pc2100 or pc2700
40 or 80gb western digital 8mb buffer
radeon 9000pro 64 or 128mb
And before anyone says "crappy mobo", this is the first problem I have ever has using one of these mobo's.
***NOTE. just about to deliver it, when while trying to transfer pics to it from cd, it won't see 3 out of the 5 cd's I tried in it. It just sits there and askes for a disc in drive d.(these discs are totally new and clean and work in every other drive around the house)
I think the 2 day old dvd-rom was failing from the start. And this may have caused the nt protection thing in the first place.***
