What should I set my virtual to in XP. I have 256 MB of Ram a 40 GB hard drive and a Pentium 4 1.80GHz processor

start size about 768 mb
max size about 1.5gb

why so high of a start? and you said 1.5 gb but what would that be in mbs?

its best to have a largeish amount of page file to prevent out of memory errors. thats why i recommended such a high start
1.5 gb is aprox 1500mbs

I'd say 500-800 initial, 1500-2000 max. Choose based on your space. But remember: With the max, more is more. Don't try to cut based on some rediculous idea that you will have better preformance.

I'd set it to about 1gb all the time.
With my 512mb I use 768 for always, thats about standard. The less RAM you have the more VM you need
