  • Problem with installing Win XP Pro

I got a new HD for my system, a WD 80 gb SATA drive. For some reason now my system will not boot from the Win XP disc - it has always been able to. After installing the HD, I wanted to do a fresh install. However I was having the boot problems, so I had to install windows with boot disks.

After the first restart, when it loads the GUI, it hangs on Preparing to Install and gives me this: Data Error Cyclic Redundancy, D:\I386\asms. Something to that effect. It advises to check the Installation CD. I tried another disc to no avail. I tried repairing the installation, I tried reformatting and reinstalling fresh, and I ran a chkdsk. I still get the same error.

I am running an Athlon 2500+ on a EPOX 8RDA3+, with onboard SATA. Btw, I installed the drivers for the SATA interface during the xp setup.

Possible conflict with the CD drive and the HD?
    Bad HD?

    I'm stumped at this point.

Re: Problem with installing Win XP Pro

Those kind of errors are commonly caused by bad RAM. Either that, or something is wrong with the HDD or the SATA controller. If you have all of the proper drivers, then those are the most likely problem. Make sure you get the latest SATA drivers and put them on a floppy. XP needs to get them during the installation.

To see if it's bad RAM, try memtest86 from my signature. Or, you could just try using different RAM.

I swapped out the RAM and still have the same problem.

And I did use the latest drivers for the SATA controller during the install. Its an onboard controller.

This can also happen if your setup is overclocked, if it is then set it back to default.

Another thing to try is increasing the memory voltage to 2.7v.

You can also go to WD's website and download their diagnostic software to check the hard drive.

                My setup is not overclocked.

Tried upping the voltage - didn't work.

Ran the WD diag tool and both the quick and extended test showed no errors on the drive.

I appreciate the help, but I am still stuck.
Could the drive still be bad?

                  Did you run memtest?

Yeah, my memory is cool. I even swapped in different memory, and same problem.

Well, see what happens when you pull the drive out. You could even try it in another machine to make abosulutely sure it works. It's also possible that the motherboard has a faulty SATA channel or something similar, which you can't do much about.
