  • Dual boot question.

Right now I am dual booting XP and Vista Ult. 64bit. I have used XP twice in two years and want to get rid of it. Is there a way that I can keep Vista and install W7 in place of XP and not lose my Vista 64?

      Re: Dual boot question.

Well If you have XP on a seperate partition you could simply format it using the Windows 7 disk install setup thingy, and install windows 7 on that partition and it should automagically set it all up sweet for dual booting.

          Re: Dual boot question.

Now I am going to throw a little complication into the matter. Let's say I want to change the cpu and motherboard to the I7. Would I be able to intall the Windows 7 under the new mobod and then go back into the vista install and fix all the drivers and not have to do a clean install. I have so many programs that would require so many updates that I figure it would take over 24 hours of reinstallations. Is that too complicated for someone on here to solve? I doubt it but I want to challenge some of you.

            Re: Dual boot question.

Now why did you have to go and make things complicated?

Of course you can install Windows 7 on its own partition with the new hardware. Things get a little more tricky when you want to run vista after a MoBo Swap. Basically there are a couple of things you can do. 1) Do the swap and cross your fingures. Vista is a little more resiliant to MoBo changes then XP. It may work, but probably wont. 2) There are certian things that can be uninstalled in the Device manager like the chipset drivers and HDD controller drivers and well pretty much all the stuff that is relevant to the old MB and then shutdown the Computer (dont let it restart or it will install the drivers again) I would advise doing a serious backup (seperate drive) even a ghost if possible because most of these procedures will most likely end up screwing your installation in the butt.

The Third thing to do is just harden up, do the fresh install and that way you will a) have a nice fresh install that will not BSOD. b) be able to only install the programs that you "really" need and hence have a nice clean fresh tidy install. c)loose a perfecly good weekend of doing nothing anyway.

As a general rule trying to get the OS to work with new Major hardware like what your asking (MoBO) is not done for various reasons. But If you really must then what ive said is a General (do at your own risk) guide, but google has a wealth of knowledge on the topic and you may find a better way.
Hope ive been of some help. End Rant!
