A properly tweaked XP is much faster & much more stable than 98...Unfortunately 98 is a really archaic OS at the moment ...I recommend XP & NTFS file system...

XP Pro and XP home are based on the same kernel. XP has some extra's that are more of a benefit for businesses, like an advanced network configuration and multiprocessor support...and about $100USD difference between them. XP Pro won't be any faster or slower than XP Home. 98 is a bit long in the tooth, and the support for it is waning. It would be ultimately best to jump to something a bit newer.
