  • Multiple Explorers

Windows Task Manager tells me that I have:

    iexplore.exe at 219,500 k
    iexplore.exe at 14,200 k
    and
    explore.exe at 7,800 k

    running at the same time
when logged on. (One of the iexplores even runs at logoff idle!) This could be some sort of a virus disguising itself as Internet Explorer but neither Verizon/McAffee or HijackThis can spot it given its benign name.

One of the iexplores resides in ServicePack\i386 subdirectory,
    another resides in Windows\Prefetch directory,
and yet another is in WINDOWS\ie8,
    plus there's one in quarantine.

To make the matter even stranger, I can find NO FILE called "explore.exe" at all!

Pretty strange stuff. Has anyone had this problem and solved it?

    Thanks in advance.

(I've got an old XP OS with puny a 2.4 Ghz processor so unnecessary programs and spyware take a real hit.)

    Re: Multiple Explorers

a lot of programs use the IE control in their programs. Its easier and more adaptive to create a website then a windows gui. It's most likely that. I have never even launcher IE on this system and I got 2 of them running. In my case both originate from my G19 keyboard and its plugins.

Not said its that, but it could be a reason

My advice - never visit a short-url, no matter who gives it to you. You can't trust any source at any time when you don't know your target
Whitey:Snuggles: Zotac Zbox HD-ID40 (Atom d525, worst purchase ever on cpu), Patriot Pyro 60GB (Thanks to Tweaktown Giveaway), 4GB 800' DDR2 SO-DIMM

      Re: Multiple Explorers

Thanks to a really informative website hosted by "Black Viper" I now know that this is normal Windows behavior. Thank you both for clearing this up. Still with over forty programs running in the background, you'd think there would be something I could safely disable, especially if I'm not connected to the internet!
