  • service won't allow harddisk to power down

Well, I have a small problem with XP (well it seems to be XP). There is a service running that keeps accessing my harddisk about every minute and a half. I know is a service because I tried killing everything else off and only after killing one of the svchost.exe did I finally get lucky and find the one that kept accessing the harddisk.
Any one have any clues how to figure out what the real program is that is continually accessing the drive through the svchost.exe program.
I would really like to find this out, so that I can let my harddisk sleep, so I can save power on this laptop. Should be able to get considerable increase in time with the harddisk spinning down periodically. It worked fine under Win2k.

Bruce I am researching the same thing. From what I can tell so far its some kind of background defrag. Though you could check your hibernate info too. Sometimes windows tries to write it just in case you lose power.
