    Windows 7 Home Premium Freezes on "Shutting Down" Screen

    Hey all, new to this forum. I came across it because for days now i have been trying to repair what seems to be the oddest PC issue i have ever encountered. My PC will get to the shutting down screen, then freeze. Keyboard and mouse power off, CD drive powers off. rest of the PC stays on. I have tried some things so far, reinstalled windows, cleared my CMOS and updated my bios, updated all drivers but nothing is working. I found a hotfix from the microsoft site especially for this issue, but when trying to apply it i get the "Hotfix not applicable to your computer". Any help i can get would be GREATLY appreciated. i may even tip =D

    Possible a program that isn't closing "properly and causing the hang. Check THIS link and select your Windows(?) OS for instructions to test by performing a "Clean Boot".

    Is this a new build that exhibits this? Or one that has been operating fine for some time and this just began?

    Did you recently install any third party anti-virus and or firewall software? If so, disable it/them before attempting to perform a shut down and see if disabling them allows a normal shut down.

        I have done a clean boot. I have Ran Glarry Ulities and cleaned 215 registry errors and received 0 disk erros on check as well. The thing about this hang is that it freezes. The loading circle next to shutting down freezes . and thats where it stops. I have also succesfully shut it down in safe mode. There has been no new 3rd part editions, in fact it wouldnt shut down on a fresh install with no drivers. And thanks so much, its nice to be here!

          Note the time you try to shut down your computer.
          Power off your computer, wait one minute and reboot.
          When you are back in the windows desktop, press the Win key, type "event viewer" (without the quotes), then click on Event Viewer in the Programs category.

          Click on the Help button at the top of the viewer's window and then click on Help Topics and expand the Event Viewer How To topic to read about viewing recent events.

          You can enlarge the viewer's window and change column widths to display more information.
          You should post a cropped screen-shot of the specific most recent errors that are reported.

          ***edit*** A test you can perform later is to remove 8GB of your 16GB of memory and see if this affects how your computer shuts down.

            I will post an image of the even viewer as soon as possible. And if the ram test works, would replacing the sticks fix the issue?

              If you have normal shutdowns with 8GB of memory instead of 16GB, this does not necessarily mean that you need to replace your current memory. It's possible that your current memory settings might need some tweaking to prevent freezing while shutting down. If needed, we will cross this bridge later.

              Another test that could be useful is to boot into windows safe mode without network support. As I recall there are only about 19 processes with ~ 220 threads in safe mode. The problem could be anywhere, such as graphics or network software.

              Right now we need to see if there is any useful information in the event viewer.

              You didn't answer all of wardog's questions and we don't have full information about your system.
              Is your system and/or graphics card overclocked? If yes, provide details.

              You can save a lot of wasted time with us asking additional questions if you do the following:

              Create a detailed hardware list in the System Specs
              portion of your forum profile at the bottom of the profile page.
              Be sure to include brand names and model numbers.
              When you are done editing or creating your hardware list, save the settings.

              We need detailed information about ALL OF THE HARDWARE in your system.

              What is the brand and model name of your power supply?
              How old is your power supply?

                Okay, ill start from the top.

                I have ran a clean boot, and ended up with the same issue.
                I built this PC and august and it has ran fine until about 2 weeks ago.
                I have gotten another monitor, and an SSD after these problems started.
                I installed Windows 7 on the 120GB Samsung 840EVO and ended with the same issues. a FREEZE, not hang at shutdown.
                Nothing is overclocked on the system.

                according to my event veiwer, this is what i can show you. if there is anything else, just let me know what you need. i hope this is what will help you

                  I have updated my PC specs as much as i could. i am in the process of learning as much as i can and this has been a real stumper for me. If you need any other information about the PC, ask and i will have it back on here ASAP. i've been dying to fix this

                    Two things caught my attention:
                    • Critical 1/6/2014 2:10:03 AM Kernel-Power 41 (63) <-- was this the time when you shutdown your system?
                    • Error 1/5/2014 8:00:37 PM Application Hang 1002 (101) <-- 6 hours earlier, probably not related

                    Please update your PC Specs with:
                    • full name and model number of your power supply
                    • full model number of each memory kit

                    How old is your power supply?
                    Can you borrow a good quality psu to test with?
                    Include a link to the manufacturer's web page for your memory.

                    A web search using: "critical kernel-power 41 (63)" (without quotes) will provide links to similar kernel power problems but there are many different possible solutions.

                    FYI, PC freezes - Kernel Power 41 critical error. Solved - Windows 7 Help Forums is one of several threads that deal with kernal power errors.

                    Once we have more information, we should be able to narrow down the problem.

                          Even a brand new power supply can have problems.
                          Your SeaSonic S12II 620 is an excellent psu that has been around for a long time.
                          Seasonic power supplies are my first choice.
                          Your memory kit is listed in G.Skill's website as compatible with your Z77X-UD3H motherboard.

                          Let us know the results of your additional testing, including a shutdown test where you use only two memory modules.

                            So I began shutting down by removing 2 sticks. Nothingg....swapped the other 2, nothing. :/
