  • Overclocking i5 2500k on Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3?

Can you give me any advice on overclocking my i5 on the Asrock Z68 E4G3 board?

I am pretty new to all this overclocking having never done it before. I have just put together my third system build and wish to overclock my cpu. This is the system I have:
    i5 2500kAsrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3 P1.10
Kingston HyperXGenesis Grey 8GB (will be increasing to 16 before xmas)
    Gelid Tranquilo cooler
Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit
    Hitachi 2tb sata3 6gb/s hdd

Those are just the basics I have for now. I dont have a dedicated graphics card or sound card yet but intend to get those either before xmas or in the new year. I don't believe I will need a high end graphics card because I'm not much of a gamer. Will probably only play the odd game F1 game etc and maybe also get MS Flight when that comes out next year. So will probably only get a mid range/priced card. I do quite a bit of work in DAW's, a lot of photo work and a tiny bit of video editing so will be getting a pretty good sound card though probably a firewire external one and mid range graphics card.

So far I have downloaded a few different programs that could be useful like OCCT, Intel Burn test, 3D Mark 11, CPU-Z, core temp 1.0, Prime 95, Super Pi Mod 1.5.Is there anything else you'd recommend I download? I also have the Asrock extreme tuner utility and anything that came with my board. I Just wondering if anyone else has the same cpu and mb as me and what settings and programs have you used to overclock your cpu, and what stable o.c. did you attain?

    Thanks,
    John.

best do all overclocking through the bios, download realtemp and keep an eye on core temps when stress testing,i think no higher than 70c on sandybridge, just raise your cpu multiplier to reach the cpu speed you want to clock to,same for ram multiplier to match your ram speed, use xmp for ram settings or set up manually, set dram voltage to whats printed on your ram,vtt voltage can be around 1.08-1.10v and cpu voltage around 1.2-1.25v for 4ghz but it all depends on your cpu, some need more some need less voltage,i wouldnt go any higher than 1.3v for cpu though, you wont need that much for 4ghz
