ASRock Extreme4 X79 Overclocking Problem

Is it possible to keep overclocked i7 3930K speed steady. It throttles back to 1200Mhz on idle no matter what i do? Help?

You need to disable eist,c1 and c3/c6 in the BIOS

I did and it is still doing. I also have power management set to High Performance in Windows.

Can you disable Intel turbo boost? It might be affecting things

I can. If i disable Turbo it disabled overclocking but it will still throttle on idle back to 1200Mhz from default clock speed. I really do not understand power management for i7 3930K. I tried to find more about it in Tweak Town review of this board but didn't help. Perhaps i am doing something wrong.

I have no idea on x79,but just disabling eist should have stopped it downclocking,its what you do on p55/x58/h55/p67/x68 so can't understand why its not working,theres something about intel management engine? Tried playing with that? I'm on phone atm so can't really Google for you

hey Karma, before you put all your effort into overclocking the h_ll out of the 3930k, there are a few things you need to put in mind

1. Have you update the board with the latest bios? (Currently @ 1.60)
2. Do you have adaquate cooling to the cpu? What heatsink are you using, and is it LGA 2011 ready? If so, have you put the heatsink properly? Have you try to resit the heatsink? I'm using the NH-D14 with the new 2011 mounting kit, and I screwed up the mounting on my first attempt. So, if you are unsured or perhaps don't mind to do extra work, I would suggest you to go ahead and re-install the heatsink first thing.
3. Do you have a proper PSU? Overclocking requires clean and smooth power delivery from the PSU, so pls verify if you have a reliable and powerful source. (My recommendation, if you have 1 PCI-e GPU, 560+, 2 GPU 850+, 3 GPU 1000W+)
4. CPU dependent factor: Some CPUs can do better than others, end of story.

So if you understand the above, let's dig in.

I would suggest you to try moderate OC for your first run, in this case, 4.0-4.4Ghz. Keep your ram in standard (Do not OC). In the BIOS, and under OC tweaker, selecte the appropriate turbo mode corresponded to your OC target. Bear in mind, these options are PROFILEs only. Go into voltage configurationand change VTT and VCCSA to manual and set them to 1.150v, Disable all C states and spectrum, Speedstep and LLC-->3. Save and exit. Once you get into window, you can start your folding process, i personally go with Prime95 for 12 hours.

If you manage to get your system past 4.4, you can try 4.6 using the 4.6 profile in the BIOS, and keep the bold setting described above in place. 4.6 profile continues to take advantage of the offset configuration, just leave it and see if you can manage to get into windows and pass a 24 hours prime. Have realtemp GT, CPU-Z for montioring. You might encounter CPU throttling @ this point, be sure to have an active cooling sourse for the vrm heatink, a good method is to find a fan blowing straight at it.

If you want to try 4.7-4.8, continue to use 4.6 turbo profile, however you need to change vcore to manual and select a vcore of 1.425v--1.45v, also turbo voltage to +0.004v. The vcore seems to be a bit on the high side, but once you get into windows and check with CPU-Z, you will find the voltage to be lower, and it will get to 1.368v-1.39v under load.

I personally able to attain 4.6Ghz with no throttling using the above method, 24 hrs stable on prime. 4.7-4.8 see throttling down to 3.3 from time to time. I am in the process figuring out a better air cooling method for the vrm. Remember, throttling can caused by vrm and/or cpu overheating.

In any case, if you want to shoot for the 5.0+mark, the only way i can think of is watercoolng. There is a new vrm waterblock coming soon from anfi-tec for the extreme 4-M. I believe it should fit the extreme 4, too.

p.s: I left the vrm protection and power protection ON. However, leaving them on/off is on your own discretion.

Thanks for your response. I did upgrade to latest 1.60 Bios and perhaps i was not clear enough. I do not have CPU throttling problem while running under load. What i am trying to do is to switch off mechanism by which CPU lowers its clock speed on Idle namely running at 1200Mhz. Basically have cpu running overclock speed regardless idle or load. As I said CPU is fine under Load and Overclocking is stable.
