  • Trouble with an Advanced Format Drive

I am running Windows Home Server 2011 on a ASRock A785GM-LE, Bios v1.30

Everything has been doing fine, until WD replaced a 2TB HDD that had gone bad with a 2.5TB drive. The OS is supposed to be able to handle drives this size, and the other, smaller AF drives I have work fine, so I think that's not the problem, but All WHS sees is 280GB. I was able to format the drive into two partitions on my Win7x64 PC, and it's working on the server, but the drive still appears as 280GB.

I can't find anything on ASRock's site, or Microsoft that gives me any clue as to whether this can be fixed or not. According to Microsoft, there shouldn't be any issue at all (other than not being able to use a volume over 2TB). From what I've read, the OS should have seen it correctly, and split into two sub 2TB partitions automatically. I didn't even want this so called "upgrade" drive, but now I have to figure out a way to use it.

    Any ideas?

What is the model number of your new WD drive?
Go to the WDC product page for your drive and you should find links for formatting software and other utilities for your drive.
From the main page at www.wdc.com you can click on WD Support / Downloads / Select Product in the support section for "Drivers, software and updates for your WD product."

Re: Trouble with an Advanced Format Drive

Well, yes, I already have those tools, but I'm not understanding how this helps the issue? I have the drive partitioned and formatted, but it still shows as 280GB to other utilities, or to my computer. They have a formatting tool for x32 Win XP because it's not compatible otherwise, but this is not supposed to be an issue with WHS 2011. The only thing left is the MB, but near as I can tell everything is up to date. This isn't a recent model MB by any means, but my 10 year old Asus MB works fine with the drive, so I'm thinking there must be a way?

Re: Trouble with an Advanced Format Drive

Maybe a web search using: gpt WHS 2011 advanced format drive will help.
        We don't know:
        - the model number of your drive
        - how the drive was formatted: software, partition sizes, partition types
        - how your drive is connected to your system
