  • Fatal1ty h87 performance help

Okay so I am doing a project and creating a mobo cover for my fatal1ty h87 performance. I have everything I need. Now the problem is is measuring the cutouts. It will be kind of hard to do using the motherboard itself but not impossible. I am wondering if there is a 1:1 replica I can buy or even a document I can print to 1:1 size on multiple pages. Or just a dead one I can buy. I am using aluminum and it's not cheap so I don't want to waste a bunch of it because I can't get the measurements right. Is there anything AS ROCK can do for me in this department? I really don't want to resort to risking my only motherboard trying to measure! Or if there are any tricks anyone can tell me please help!!

    Welcome to the forum.

What do you mean by a "motherboard cover".

Do you want to fabricate a motherboard tray?

Are you trying to do something similar to Asus armor motherboards?
If yes, motherboard head buildup might be a problem.

      thank you for your reply

Yes, tray/cover/armor. Very simple one. And I will be using aluminum, a natural heatsink so it won't be a big deal and its just for aesthetics and fun.
My problem is getting the measurements without damaging my board which I may do anyways but will take a whole lot longer cause I have to be careful. This is like what I want to do

        Re: Fatal1ty h87 performance help

        You're welcome.

A google image search for your motherboard provides several high resolution photos.

You could make a cardboard template and use the motherboard's stand-off mounting hole measurements to help insure that the template is accurate.

With your system powered off and the power supply's cable unplugged from the wall outlet, there is much less chance of damage while measuring your board.

Using a 150mm or 200mm (6 or 8 inch) vernier caliper (with or without a dial) should give you accurate measurements.
Local hardware or big box stores might have inexpensive plastic calipers.

My concern with excess heat buildup is that your computer case's normal interior airflow will not provide adequate cooling.

You can save a lot of time and money if you cover the cardboard template with aluminum foil and then mount it.

i think I got one of those tools. Thanks for the advice it really helps. Sh*t maybe I'll do that carboard foil trick and put some flashy lights on it lol

            Re: Fatal1ty h87 performance help

Using a crinkled foil surface with multi-colored flashing lights would look good, that is, if you are into that sort of thing.

It will probably be best to glue the aluminum foil to the cardboard motherboard cover.

I'm curious to see what type of mounting setup you design to keep the cover securely mounted above the motherboard.

Obviously you don't want the foil to contact any components on the motherboard's surface.

Yeah im not using aluminum foil I hope you're joking. I'll be using mobo standoffs inbetween mobo and cover. I should get my stuff in the mail this week. Going to use a jigsaw to cut my aluminum sheets. The measuring part is going to be a little difficult.

The question is were you joking when you said "maybe I'll do that cardboard foil trick and put some flashy lights on it lol"?

You will probably need to install small diameter flat washers on top of each of the motherboard's standoff mounting holes to prevent damage to the motherboard.

Hopefully the new standoffs will be tall enough for the aluminum cover to clear all of the capacitors.
