  • GA-EP45-DS5 plus Q6600: not even standard speed

    Hi everyone,

I have this strange problem, the above combination won't even run on standard speed, but is running on 2.13 GHz.....

The only alterations I have made are updating the BIOS to F12, and enabling AHCI, that's it.
When I look at the settings in the BIOS, I see it's running at 8 MP and not at 9, when I switch to 9 I don't even get past POST.

The Q6600 is a G0 stepping, so that should be okay.

    The RAM I'm using is KHX7200D2K2/2G, this is DDR2, 900 MHz, non-ECC, CL5, 5-5-5-15, 2.1 V

Anyone any clues about how to solve this? In the end I was hoping to be running near to 3 GHz, but for now it seems as though I'll have a long way to go.

In addition to my first post, I guessed it would be helpfull if I put the current settings of M.I.T here:

Re: GA-EP45-DS5 plus Q6600: not even standard speed

For now I just keep helping myself ;)

Might be fun for you to see a newbie struggle :p

I am finally running stockspeed now, 2.40 GHz

      Steps I took:

      1) went into BIOS and changed DRAM settings, latency was all on auto, is manually put on 5-5-5-15 now, and the voltage, according to Kingston at 2.1V (pink in BIOS, but tried anyway)

      2) restarted and completed full boot into system

      3) restarted again, back into BIOS and set the CPU Clock Ratio to 9, so now it's 9x266

      4) restarted again, checked POST and saw 2.4 GHz and booted into system, as you can see, and also got 2.4 in my sysinfo now.

Am I doing it right so far, or am I severely damaging my system now?

Re: GA-EP45-DS5 plus Q6600: not even standard speed

First of all after you flash you need to load and apply optimized defaults. This is a MUST with a BIOS flash, and likely why your CPU is picked up as one with a 8 Multi if you did not do this.

As for your speed issue, you must disable EIST and C1E (Intel SpeedStep) that is what clocks down your CPU multiplier and voltage when you are idle

All you have done is correct and safe, warning are in the BIOS for those who do not know what they are doing. Your memory spec is 2.1V, that is the warrantied amount. It may or may not need that. 2.0-2.1 would be fine, possibly even less

Sorry no one had replied to help you, I had just got in just now!

Here would be recommended stock settings for your setup >>>>

Thank you for the advice Lsdmeasap,

          I'll be applying them now.

If I don't come back online, you know I need more advice ;)

Online again, so first step is a succes.
Below the settings as they are now, in RED you see the values I applied when given more choices.
Now I'll start bringing down the settings for the RAM.

            I'll be back....(at least, I hope so ;) )

Re: GA-EP45-DS5 plus Q6600: not even standard speed

Okay, settings are in accordance with your reccomendation now, and everything seems to be running stable and smooth.

Would you also happen to have advice as to how to set it up to run at or near 3 Ghz?

In the meantime, just to be on the safe side, I went back to failsafe settings, applies your settings in two steps and safed the settings as well, using F11 (yes, i have been reading )

UPDATE: Since I'm on a OS X machine I had to use some other stuff to do the testing. I used CPUTest and mprime257. Both run without any problems and the temperature of the cores never exceeds 60 degrees celsius.

Nice to hear! Fail Safe is never really needed, Optimized maybe. But all you need to do is save a stock Stable profile and you will be good to go.

Nice to hear your testing went well, that is a plus!

Above, you did not say what you was using for MANY of the values so I am not really sure what you have set.

So you want 3Ghz eh, try this and keep in mind you will need to up the vcore for sure and what you set in the BIOS is not what you get in windows. You can check the difference with CPU-z, but not sure if that will run on Mac or not? >>>

GA-EP45-DS5 plus Q6600: Yes in OS X, No in Windows7

Okay, one year later and still struggling ;)

No, to be honest, I returned to stock and played it safe. But today is a rainy day down here, so the BIOS begged me to fool around a bit in it

Changes from my original setup is the RAM, I am using Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800 CL4 now, 8 Gb in total, 4x2 Gb.

The only thing I changed from the stock settings are the following:
CPU 400x8 gives me 3.2 Ghz
RAM also at 400, combined with 2.00D brings me to 800
Voltage of RAM is at 2.00

                    Everything else is stock.

Now the fun part: Mac OS X runs flawlessly, Windows7 boots into a BSOD that's shown for about 0.2 seconds.

                    Go figure.....

Simple, you're going to have to dig into the manual settings a bit. Adjust as follows:

PCI Express Frequency (Mhz) : 100
                      tRFC : 62
                      Static tRead Value : 9
CPU Vcore : DEFINITELY off Auto, try 3-4 notches above stock, or look at current reported Vcore and try to get a bit higher than that
CPU Termination : 1.35v (adjust this first, keep it under 1.45)
                      MCH Core : 1.25 or 1.35v

It pretty much goes like "up Vcore, up VTT, test again". Does Windows 7 boot correctly at stock? If it doesn't, something might've gotten corrupted, it happened to me a couple times.

Set settings on Normal instead of auto. Auto seems to screw them up.
                            (settings below cpu settings)
