  • ep45-ds3 400FSB OK but not 433FSB!!!???

    Hi,

I have been reseting bios ### number of times lately...and I am getting really tired of doing that.... and also a bit afraid of destroying something.

    My rig : ->
    Ep45-ds3
    Q9550 E0 stepping
    Corsair ddr2 800 Mhz 444-12 @ 2.1 V OFFICIAL rating

I can get it to run at 3.4 Ghz (400 fsb) but NOT on 3.68 Ghz (433 fsb). At 433 fsb windows starts up but as soon as I run prime95 it crashes quite directly. Please help me, I am tired and desperate.

By the way, getting it to run at 400 fsb with 4-4-4-12 timing I can achive without increasing any voltage (just setting cpu volt to 2.25, dram to 2.1 and the rest of the settings from auto to the fixed values, where applicable).

To reach 400 fsb I did the following basically (dont know how to get all info copied and pasted in here like others do...so I have to write from the top of my head ).

    Loaded optimized defaults.
Turned of all powersaving stuff, like EIST C1E...
Set CPU volt to 2.25 (not auto but same as VID I guess)
Set PCI freq to 100 (not auto but default I guess)
    C.I.A2 disabled
Performace enhance I set to lowest...or something like that
    X.M.P disabled
    MCH freq latch to 400
System memory multiplier (SPD) set so that it shows 800 as result...
DRAM timing set to manual where I set 4-4-4-12.
DRAM Volt I increased to 2.1 (as it states on the memories). Increasing it further to 2.2x didn't help at 443 fsb. Have not tried 2.3v.
MCH I doesnt matter if I have 1.1 or 1.3 when running 400 fsb but having 1.3 does not help 433 fsb.

With the above (which I have as typing now and running prime) works ok... (1 hour now running prime )...but when I do the single change in bios of FSB to 433 I cannot get prime to work (but windows starts up). Then I have to reset bios to get the computer to work.

I am getting desperat here...please help me. I really want to go higher than 400 fsb which I think shouldnt be any problem really...or???? Must be something that I am missing here...

    Thanks
    Peter.

PS1. I tried running 433 fsb with relaxed timings of the mem as well...like more than 5-5-5-18 (it was auto, something like 6..6...20 cpuz reported), but it failed as well.

PS2. I have updated from bios F7 to latest F9 as well but no difference in results.

PS3. The temps that realtemp/cpuid hw monitor (43,42,41,42)/(48,47,46,47) show as max in centigrade celcius aren't very high during prime...

PS4. When going from 400 fsb to 433 I did 410 and 420 before. 410 was ok without any volt change. 420 I had to inc cpu and mch volt to 1.3 and 1.16. However looking back maybe I was a bit to fast, I don't know if it really was stable, I didn't run that much prime really....

PS5. Running at 400 fsb and 444-12 really seems OK so far.

Again....please help me to get further with my computer and thanks for this forum!!!

    Peter.

Hi again...the last thing before I have to go to bed....late here now..

I tried to relax the timing from 444-12 to 555-18. All this as fsb 433. It did not help. Prime crashed event at 555-18 at 433 fsb.

      Thanks

        Re: ep45-ds3 400FSB OK but not 433FSB!!!???

Give me a link to your ram please

And if you have not please test each stick one by one with memtest86+ (Must be this 2.01 version linked) >>>
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Do this test with manually set main timings, manually set speed to stock, performance enhance on standard, manually set ram voltage and everything else on auto.

This test is to let you know if maybe you have a faulty stick of ram

But in the end I think you are leaving FAR to many settings on Auto to try to overclock as you are. I will help you once you get me your ram link and test your ram

          Hi Lsdmeasap,

Thank's for taking time to help me! I really appriciate it. The amount of people you help here at the forum is amazing...really nice!!

Here is a link to the memory ->

I did run memtest once (from bootable dos flash usb) directly after I put the computer together. That was not at 444-12 and 400 fsb for sure. It was whatever bios version F7 (not latest) as default gave me. I think remembering it was 555-18 and 333 fsb....probably 4:5 ratio'ed though since I saw that in cpu-z first time I got into windows. Memtest passed at that time.

Maybe that memtest run is OK to conclude that the memories are OK?

FYI, I have tried before to change basically all settings to manual instead of auto when I got 400fsb working, and then, tried to go from 400fsb to 433 but failed. I suspect that setting everything to manual is not the way when reading posts where you helped others. Maybe some has to be auto?

Do you think it's a good idea to load optimised defaults again? Then get it to run at 400 fsb (1:1 ratio) again, run prime and maybe a 3dmark vantage and then post a nice and *complete* settings of the bios. Or should I start with memtest as you mention?

          Thanks alot
          Peter.

            Re: ep45-ds3 400FSB OK but not 433FSB!!!???

Well if you only ran it once then no. I suggest you test each stick by themselves for 10 passes each to be sure

Yes, some Auto for sure. I would memtest and then start with optimized (Dont forget to set your disk settings again)

And then start over with attempting to overclock.

Try this for your overclock at 433 FSB >>>>

              Hi again,

Below is what I got in bios when loaded optimised defaults. I didn't change anything, just started windows and have now been running prime for 1 hours 37 minutes (mixed).

Here is a screenshot of Prime, HW monitor, cpu-z and Realtemp.

                Hi again,

I tried 433fsb, but no luck at all. Windows started but crashed directly. I didn't have any chance to do anything in windows. Computer restarted and I could enter bios without having to clear CMOS though. Bios didn't tell me that there was something wrong either.

Here is the bios settings I had.

                Thanks

                  Hi,

It feels like I am spamming you...but I want to give you more info.

I tested this. Loaded back optimised defaults and setup bios according to my knowledge to run 400fsb. Windows started...here is a pic of it idling

and here is when I just started prime

                    Re: ep45-ds3 400FSB OK but not 433FSB!!!???

                    Hi, I am back again

I ran more than a hour prime (blend) without any crash. Now I switched to small fft and continue to run.

Here is a pic of the situation. Check the CPU volt! 1.152 according to CPU-Z when running small fft in Prime. It was 1.168 when running larger fft though.

What should I do now to be able to reach 433fsb? Maybe crank up the CPU volt to start with....hehe.

                    Thanks
                    Peter.

Ya, looks to me like that is all you need is more volts. Then once you get your CPU Stable you can work on ram timings.

Since you are not getting a warning in the BIOS that means you are almost there! Good job and keep at it

                        Hi,

ahh, just read "memory timings explained" post . Didn't know about the tool Memset. I will test it and see what the actual timings are now when running at 400fsb. Lets hope it works on my p45 board, seems to be a few that have problems with that...

                          Hi,

How should I increase the volt and on what parts? Right now, all the volts are statically set...as below

                          Motherboard Voltage Control
                          Voltage Type.………...Normal Current
                          CPU
                          CPU Vcore….……….........................: 1.25000V [Auto] >>> 1.25000V [1.25000V]
                          CPU Termination…..... 1.200V.......: [Auto] >>> 1.200V [1.200V]
                          CPU PLL…………………....1.500V.......: [Auto] >>> 1.500V [1.500V]
                          CPU Referen.…………....0.760V.......: [Auto] >>> 0.760V [0.760V]

                          MCH/ICH
                          MCH Core…………….....1.100V...........[Auto] >>>1.100V [1.100V1]
                          MCH Reference….…….0.76V...........; [Auto] >>> 0.760V [0.760V]
                          MCH/DRAM Ref.…......0.900V...........: [Auto] >>> 0.900V [0.900V]
                          ICH I/O……………….....1.500V............: [Auto] >>> 1.500V [1.500V]

                          DRAM
                          DRAM Voltage ……....1.800V............: [Auto] >>> 1.800V [2.100V]
                          DRAM Termination .…0.900V............: [Auto] >>> 0.900V [0.900V]
                          Channel A Reference 0.900V............: [Auto] >>> 0.900V [0.900V]
                          Channel B Reference 0.900V............: [Auto] >>> 0.900V [0.900V]

                          Now at 400fsb ->
windows idling CPU-z report 1.2V, (0.05 lower than bios)
                          running Prime CPU-z report 1.155 - 1.168 , (0.1 lower than bios)

                          Thinking of setting ->

CPU Vcore to 1.3, or maybe 1.35??? Or is it overkill?
                          MCH core to 1.3???
                          DRAM voltage to 2.2???
Keep CPU PLL on statically set 1.5, since I read somewhere that you said its best so....or am I wrong here?

What about the rest of the voltages? Auto or keep or change?

                          Thanks
                          Peter.

Try setting more vcore of course but also add some vtt, maybe 1.24-1.34

Yes keep Pll set to stock, ram will be fine at 2.. Try MCH to 1.2-1.26

                            The rest all Auto
