  • Which Stress Program?

I've been liking Intel Burn test. It's easy, quick and it gets the job done.

I have no problem running 5 tests with intel burn test to check for stability and later on when At work leave a longer program like OCCT or Orthos or something to test.

I don't know. Is Intel Burn test enough? It does seem work very well.

I use real temp to monitor my temps. That's fine isn't it?

What do you guys recommend to stress with? And why? What advantages does [ enter your program name here ] have over Intel Burn test?

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Which Stress Program?

I like that Intel Burn Test, too. I usually set it for 20 runs, which takes about an hour on my setup. I generally have the memory already confirmed through MemTest86+, so IBT just helps me find the CPU voltage. It might run for a while then reboot when I'm not looking. So I add a tick of voltage and start again, then it might fail to match numbers. So I add another tick of voltage and it usually passes all twenty. Good enough for my needs.

Major congrats on that nice OC! I'd been following your thread, and know that it took a while for it all to arrive. I've been contemplating an E5200 for my low flying P35-S3G, and that 10x390 looks about as good as it can get. What is your CPU voltage set at?

Anything that loads the CPU up significantly is fine for stress testing. Most of the time you'll CPU will never be quite that stressed (even with encoding/decoding, cpu intensive games etc).

So OCCT, or Orthos which I believe is just a tweaked "front end" to the proper Prime95 is fine.

Well Prime95 seems to be very popular, and is easy to use. There are those that claim that Intel Burn Test stresses the system more, and will find failures much more quickly, like in minutes, compared to hours for Prime95. I used to use Sisoft Sandras burn-in test, as it had a nice GUI and displayed graphs of temps and stuff as it ran. Everest has a burn-in test which looks nice and seems to be easy to use, but it didn't seem to stress my system very hard (temps didn't rise as much as with Prime95 and IBT).

My fav just now is LinX, which I think is a nice GUI nailed onto the Linpack test that is the engine of the Intel Burn Test, but I could be mistaken. It's easy to use and seems to stress my system a lot.

My preferred is IBC (Linpack) with 20 or more runs, not that fancy look but who cares?

As I said before, I like IBT a lot. But it's not enough on its own. I proved that to myself yesterday. I raised my FSB one mHz to 8x381 (ddr953), knowing that the memory speed is my limiting factor. First, I looped MemTest86+ #5 fifty times, and it counted one (1) error in pass 16. Second, I ran twenty trials of IBT, and all numbers matched. Third, I looped MemTest86+ #5 fifty times again, and it counted four (4) errors, two each in passes 34 and 42. So, just because it passes IBT doesn't mean it'll pass MemTest86+, which I feel is primarily important. I backed it down to 8x380 (ddr950) and looped #5 fifty times without error.

Another thing to consider when using IBT with merely the default 5 trials, is that the CPU & individual cores may not have yet reached their peak temperatures within the first five trials. That time/temp statistic can be viewed on a temperature graph, such as in SpeedFan.

For my needs, I feel confident enough using the combination of IBT x20 and MemTest86+ #5 x50, although that's no guarantee that it'd pass other popular stessors. Our resident wizard told me several weeks ago that I'd have to find a happy medium between tight timings and stability. I guess that's what keeps the P in PC.

                yep ... for the P ..

me i ran them all ... pime95, occt, linkpax , intell burning, memtest , and always memtest86+ .... hehehehe .. over caution

when in OC quick refrerent i like to use OCCT. but always do a full full test of everything at the end

It just completed OCCT Auto Mix. I had forgotten about those graphs in the final report ... nice.
