  • EP45-DS3L resume from S3 unstable on F10 bios

    Hello

Lately my EP45-DS3L has been driving me up the creek when it comes to stability, well no, its stable as a rock, until I let it sleep for a few hours and then do a resume, then it crashes on me pretty bad, to the point where even restarting the machine doesn't solve its instability. I have to turn off the entire machine and unplug it for several minutes before I can think of even trying to get a successful boot out of it (sometimes it takes many attempts of even this). Sometimes the system will go even more crazy and constantly start up/shut down before it even POSTs but more often it'll just BSOD on vista startup.

It all started happening after I moved to the F10 bios, before that it was just the 'normal' resume from s3 instability where one out of every 3 or so resumes would be met by a BSOD, and I could just restart and be on my way.

I'm using G.skill ram (6400CL4D) in a 2x2 configuration, with the ram voltage at 2.1v and an e8400. I can do a stable overclock to 3.6ghz easily with it and prime95 & memtest86 testing has proved it is stable, but until the S3 issue is fixed i'm leaving it at stock. When the system is stable i've done probably about 24+ hours of prime95 testing to ensure the system is stable.

I've loaded optimized defaults many times and reflashed it over a few times as well. I'm considering re-flashing down to F8 but I don't know that that will solve the problem. I've tried setting memory settings manually to ones posted on the forum but none of them have met with any success.

Anyone have any ideas? Maybe I should RMA it and pick up a different brand of motherboard? This is really making me pull my hairs out.

Re: EP45-DS3L resume from S3 unstable on F10 bios

If you would like me to check out your 3.6 settings please post them and I will see if I see anything out of the ordinary. What you can do while you wait for me to post back is Find and disable Legacy USB Storage Detect (Integrated Peripherals) and remove any external devices and see if that helps for now

I would only recommend F9 or F10 as F8 and below do not have the S3 sleep fix

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

Already had legacy USB Storage Detection disabled, but thanks for the tip anyway :)

Also quickly testing sleep for a few minutes doesn't reproduce the problem. However, if the computer is left in sleep for several hours, then it turns into the unstable mess I described

Re: EP45-DS3L resume from S3 unstable on F10 bios

Thanks, I'll give the stock settings a try before I go to sleep and leave it in s3 mode. Its a shame that gigabyte is selling a board that doesn't work out of the box , but you're a great help and I thank you very much for your time helping me out here :)

I don't have some of the voltage options, like for the ICH core, perhaps thats because i'm on a DS3L as opposed to a similar but different model board?

update -- I got a BSOD immediately upon entering sleep with the stock settings listed, I'll try seeing if I can tweak them

update2 -- even with things set to the higher end of your recommendations I'm getting crashes within windows now

Re: EP45-DS3L resume from S3 unstable on F10 bios

Well 2x2 always need some adjustments as boards are setup for 2x1, OEM boards work out of the box... $150+ means you WANT to set your own settings. Auto should only be used to get you into the BIOS to make your desired changes

Ya, some boards do not have all settings.. Such as a "L" Budget model

You would have to post exactly what you try for me to advise as to why stock may fail for you, I gave ranges so not sure what you used.

Good luck, I will see you tomorrow as I am on my way out the door

edit -- this seems stable, I copped out because I'm getting tired and set some of the memory timings back to auto and the MCH skew to 0ps , its ran through prime95 for 15 minutes stable so far, will see if it solves the S3 sleep resume problem in the morning

Re: EP45-DS3L resume from S3 unstable on F10 bios

Tried to resume from sleep this morning, was greeted by the fans spinning up to full speed but no video out from the computer or anything else, had to turn it off manually

now when I turn it on it turns itself on for a few seconds and then right off and then on again, and repeats. I had to unplug it from the mains completely for a minute and then plug it back in again to get it to boot up. But now its gone back to BSOD'ing everywhere.

Something tells me this boards issues stem from more than just bad bios settings.

update-- left it unplugged from the mains for 10 minutes and tried starting it up then, its still unable to boot into windows on the same settings that were stable last night.

I eventually tried resetting to optimal defaults in the bios, still no luck, and moved down to 1x2gb and managed to get it to have a stable boot. I have tried that previously when it goes into one of these 'unstable' modes and didn't have any luck so maybe its just a fluke, but I've put it into s3 mode with one stick to see if it'll behave any better when it wakes up. In the long run though I do want to run 2x2gB sticks of course as 2gB itself is far too limiting

1x 2gB seemed to be fine resuming from S3 , but I can't think of what more to try for 2x2gB

its only when i'm resuming when the machine has been in sleep for a few hours, otherwise the machine is stable

Well since 2x1 works for you, be sure you test each of the other set one by one to be sure they are not faulty. Then it is all just in the settings to get 2x2 stable.

Auto is not going to work, you will need to spend the time and manually tweak the 2x2 to get it stable if S3 is that important to you. If you really need it start with 2x2 with all the high settings I suggested and see if it resumes correctly, if not you may need a little bit more voltage somewhere is all

Also try using 402 FSB and 2.00D multi for now
