  • GA-EP43-DS3L Won't Boot in Dual-channel

    Hi,

I'm new here and wasn't having any success on Gigabyte's TS website so I thought I would try this approach. I have the above motherboard and it has just all of a sudden stopped POSTing in dual-channel and will not wake from S3 sleep.(supposedly fixed in an earlier BIOS) I believe it shipped with F6 BIOS and I have tried everything from that through F9A. Is there a further beta BIOS available? I have also tried other RAM than the original G.Skill 2x2g. I am an experienced builder and have tried all the voltage tweaks, drivers are all current etc.

    Thanks in advance

Have you tried booting with one stick of ram?

Yes I've tried all that;system runs fine in any other config but dual-channel.Sorry thought I was clear on that.

Bump?......... I noticed the beta BIOS has been out awhile now and many people are haveing RAM compatibility issues still and with good quility kits.
Are they working on a BIOS fix for this?

Yes, they are working on a New final BIOS as you see it is in Beta. I would go back to the latest Stable NON Beta if I was you and see how that goes.

Was you using this beta F9a when all was working good? Have you tried re-seating the CPU?

I've been so desperate for an answer I've torn everything down and started over three times.I even bought a more powerful PSU because I thought my 4870 was drawing down too much power.

I have also experienced this issue. I tried everything with no luck. Last night I tried switching the RAM from banks 1 and 3 to 2 and 4. Ran Memtest86 all night (5 passes with no errors). So far all day today seems stable. I will be puting a heavier load on it tonight and see how it responds to that. I am so glad I am not the only one having this issue. I am an expierenced builder as well and thought I was losing my touch or just plain going nuts. Hope they put out a fix soon.

              **Update**
So I tested a few games and all seemed fine. Went to grab a bite to eat and left the computer idle. By the time I got back it was froze up at the login screen. Seems my troubles continue.

                Smeg
Are you having issues running 2x2gig in single channel mode? I seem to only be able to get 1 running without freezing up randomly.

Guys, please post links to your ram and the settings you are using and I will advise. Auto is often wrong, and some other default settings may be causing you issues >>>

                    Re: GA-EP43-DS3L Won't Boot in Dual-channel

                    Hi,

since i am expiriencing the same problems i'd like to post my setup and BIOS values and hope some can guide me what to change. I am not able to run my RAM in DUAL Channel mode, memcheck throws errors over and over. Searching the internet for a solution i finally found this forum with these particular postingings.

I'm not that familiar with all these RAM, BIOS, etc. settings, so perhaps someone can help me.

                    I am running the GA-EP43-DS3L with an E8400 @ 3.00 GHz with 2x 1GB OCZ DDR2 PC2-9200 Reaper HPC Edition (OCZ Technology | Products | Memory | OCZ DDR2 PC2-9200 Reaper HPC Edition)

                        Re: GA-EP43-DS3L Won't Boot in Dual-channel

                        Hi Lsdmeasap,

first of all thank you for your reply. I tried a lot of variations with the values you suggested me to set. From the highest to the lowest, with every option and so on... but it obviously did not match the correct setting. After every value-change i booted memtest2.11 from CD and it threw errors right from the beginning of the tests. So i first decided to put the RAM back into single channel mode.

The OCZ website says the following for my RAM modules:

                        Code:
                        i965 Chipset
                        CAS 5
                        TRDC 5
                        TRP 5
                        TRAS 18
                        TWR 6
                        TRRC 42
                        TRRD 11
                        TRTR 11
                        TRTP 11
                        TWTP 11

                        i680 Chipset
                        CACAS 5
                        TTRDC 5
                        TRTRP 5
                        TRAS 18
                        TRTRRD 6
                        TRC 33
                        TWR 6
                        TWTR 11
                        TREF 3.9
As i don't know very much about what these values are good for, i'd like to know, whether you can 'translate' them to the values the GA-EP43-DS3L supports to configure. For example the 'Advanced Timing Control' section and all the setting within the 'Channel A/B' section.
                        Code:
                        tRRD...........................................
                        tWTR..........................................
                        tWR............................................
                        tRFC...........................................
                        tRTP...........................................
                        Command Rate (CMD) ....................:

                        Static tRead Value.........................
                        tRD Phase0 Adjustment...................

                        etc.
                        What does i965/i680 Chipset mean?

Sorry for my noob knowledge, but i'd like to know more about all these things. All my new pc parts were not so cheap, so i'd like to get them running in the way they supposed to run

                        Regards, oseeliger

                        <edit>
Well, after further investigation using google and several forums i found out that plenty of people are having problems with GA-EP43-DS3L and OCZ DDR2 PC2-9200 Reaper HPC Edition running in Dual Channel.

And noone found an acceptable solution ... this is weird .. :(

                          Re: GA-EP43-DS3L Won't Boot in Dual-channel

It means those settings do not apply to you at all. Those are chipsets for boards that were made years ago.

What you should do is set all timings I posted for you to the highest, then work your way down. If you are getting errors with them all at the highest posted then you have voltage issues as those are very loose on the high end and should give you no issues at all

I have seen no issues, but then again not alot of P43 users are overclockers as that is a very budget based board

Here is some Ram info if you want to read about SOME of those settings >>>

If you continue to have issues please post back for me the EXACT settings you are trying that fail and I will advise back

                            Re: GA-EP43-DS3L Won't Boot in Dual-channel

                            Hi Lsdmeasap,

i finally found the correct configuration, BIOS settings and RAM placement. I had the 2 modules put into bank 1 + 3 to run them in dual channel. Now i put them into 2 + 4, which, with the correct BIOS settings, runs stable. I think it's a strange behavior anyway, why is bank 1 + 3 not working?

Whatever ... i am happy that it's working fine now.

The BIOS settings i made are the following. The green values in brackets i am running right now until my new CPU cooler arrives, since the settings are causing the CPU to run overclocked. The boxed intel cooler is not really useful for overclocked CPUs... the temperature could be even less when not overclocked.

                            Code:

So, thank you for help and i hope that any other person could find this solution helpful. So here again the hardware i built together:

                            MOBO: Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L
                            RAM: OCZ DDR2 PC2-9200 / 1150 MHz / Reaper HPC Edition / Dual Channel (2GB (2x1024) D/C Kit PN - OCZ2RPR11502GK)

Thanks again, great forum and great advises.

                            Cheers, oseeliger

                              Re: GA-EP43-DS3L Won't Boot in Dual-channel

Bank 1+3 may not be working if you have a faulty slot on your board. Can you test each slot one by one with one stick of ram? Please run this test at stock with one stick, do 5 passes for each slot. Be sure you set your ram voltage and put performance enhance on standard >>>
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

That is if you do want to check your slots, if not then dont worry about that. but do keep in mind if you have a bad slot you would want to RMA now instead of later when you maybe wanted to add more ram and then remember you maybe have bad slots and never tested

But then again, some boards just work better with certain slots. That does not always mean the others are bad, they just may need different settings is all

Settings look good! Ya, Stock coolers are only good for stock speeds, any more then that and they got hot pretty quick, especially since Intel took out the Copper core centers on them

Good luck with your tweaking and testing

Thanks for the kind words and post back anytime if you need some help when you get your cooler or otherwise!
