  • Question about running GA-P35-DS3R v1.0 with G.Skill F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK

I recently ordered this ram, G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail. I'm wondering if there are any variables that need to be adjusted so that I can run this RAM, advanced tweaks or voltages, whatever it may be. Here's the computer I'm running, any help is much appreciated.

    GA-P35-DS3R v1.0 F13C Bios
    Intel c2q q6600 @ 3.3ghz (367 x 9)
    MSI Geforce 260 GTX
    Audigy 2 ZS
    Corsair HX620W

    Re: Question about running GA-P35-DS3R v1.0 with G.Skill F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK

My backup machine has a P35-DS3L so I can only give you some generalities.

Manually set the primary memory timings to 5-5-5-15 (per spec).

A 3.0 SPD multiplier will set your memory to 1101 (3x367). If your memory can't run at this speed, start with a CPU clock @ 355 and gradually work your way up.

Memory voltage should probably be set at 2.1 volts (max spec rating).

Before you install your new memory, go into the bios (M.I.T. section) and set the new DRAM volts. If your bios is like my DS3L, you'll need to set the voltage to +0.3 volts (1.8 + 0.3 = 2.1). You should also set the CPU clock speed to 355 or a bit higher if you're the cautious type.

    1) Exit the bios (F10 = save settings and exit).
    2) Turn your computer off and unplug the external power cord that goes to your psu.
    3) Install your new memory.
    4) Reconnect the power cord to your psu and turn your computer on.
    5) Pray

You should run several passes of MemTest86+ to verify that your don't get any memory errors. Once your memory passes MemTest86+, run a stability test program in Windows for at least 4 - 6 hours. Longer is better. Prime95, OCCT, or Orthos are good programs. Check the BENCHMARKING sticky for links to download these programs.

MCH voltage should probably be set to 1.2 volts minimum and possibly 1.22 - 1.26 volts.

It shouldn't take too long for others to chime in and share their settings and suggestions.

You can use the forum's advanced SEARCH function to find existing threads that deal with your memory & mobo.

Let us know how you finally make out.

Yes, you will need to adjust your Memory Multiplier so you can run 1066Mhz, and you would need to set your ram voltage and possibly/likely add some MCH Voltage

I can give you some advised settings if you like, I need to know your full settings you are using now, or what speed you want to run your CPU then I can advise back >>>

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

Well you will need a higher FSB to run faster or up to 1066. At that FSB I would only advise Memory Multiplier 2.40B for 880Mhz, or you could try 2.66D for 975Mhz. The later may need some adjustments to MCH and or Static tRead different then Suggested below >>>

Thanks for the reply, is 2.40B for 880Mhz easier on the memory controller than 2.66D? Optimally I would like to run 2.66D for the higher memory FSB but I want it to be stable rather than faster. What (G)MCH OverVoltage Control and Static tRead Value out of 6-10 would you reccomend for running the 2.66D? As far the as the CPU vcore is concerned, the drop is to about 1.44 and the droop is to about 1.2816, but miraculously is 100% stable doing small FFT's in prime for over 12 Hrs.

Got the ram in, got a bluescreen IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL right away with MCH +0.1V, bumped up to +.2V and no bluescreen yet

Edit: I spoke too soon, bluescreen with +.2V MCH, bumped to max at +.3V

2.66D is likely easier on the controller since that is within the FSB range for that strap

MCH maybe +2, if that does not work then use +2.5 if you have it, if not +.3 (Sorry, I reply as I read, I see you bumped it already)

Static tRead you may be able to use 6 on that board, depends on voltages set. Just try lower until it fails then go back up one

I cannot get this memory to run stable, I keep getting IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD. :( I'm not really sure where to go from here.

I've run windows memory diagnostics and I receive no errors on the memory but still gives that random BSOD message.

Did you lower the CPU VOLTAGE?

LSDME wrote: CPU Voltage Control_______ [1.39750] << you sure you need this for only 3.3Ghz?

At 367 MHz, you are overclocking your cpu 10%, and should be able to run at the standard CPU voltage. Manually set your voltage to the stock VID for your cpu. Do NOT use AUTO or NORMAL for this setting.

Before you test again, verify that your memory is fully seated in their slots. Also re-seat all motherboard connectors and PCI cards.

I suggest that you back down to non-overclocked settings where you are running at 333 MHz. At this speed, you can use the 4.0B memory multiplier to run your memory at its 1066 rated speed with 5-5-5-15 settings.

When you reply with your results, include the current bios settings that you've applied. If we don't know the current settings, we can't properly advise you what needs to be changed.

At this point, you should run Memtest86+ for 5 - 10 full passes to verify that their are no memory errors.

If these settings work, use your computer for several days to verify that everything is stable. You'll also want to do stability testing with Prime95, OCCT, and/or Orthos for 6-10 hours for each test. I run each of these tests overnight.

Time consuming? YES! There's no shortcut to setting up a stable system. Once everything is stable, you can start overclocking in small (10 MHz) increments and repeating the stability tests.

Oddly enough, I set the ram from 881 to 918 Spd in the bios by picking a higher strap setting. Since, I have done that at 5-5-5-15 speed and everything else auto, the computer has been completely stable. Does this make any sense. All i can imagine is that the auto settings at that FSB were too aggressive.

                          Re: Question about running GA-P35-DS3R v1.0 with G.Skill F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK

                          At 881 MHz you're using the 2.40B memory multiplier [367 x 2.40].
                          At 918 MHz you're using the 2.50A memory multiplier [367 x 2.50].

You should immediately save your current stable configuration in your bios profiles. I suggest giving it meaningful name such as: 250A367x918auto
You can save up to 8 different bios profiles.

Leaving some of the memory settings or voltages on AUTO puts you at the mercy of the mobo's algorithms, for better or for worse. This is why LSDME suggests specific manual settings. If a configuration fails, you can easily test for improved stability and/or performance by changing one setting at a time.

When you've altered your settings, you need to tell us all the settings that have changed. For example, are you still running with your excessively high CPU voltage? Did you change the voltage when you changed the memory multiplier? In some/many cases, excessively high voltage can cause instability and/or reboot problems.

Once you've performed full stability testing, you can try for increased system performance. With the proper manual settings you might be able to run with 355 x 3.0A with a memory speed = 1065, or possibly a bit higher.

My memory runs stable with 459 x 2.40B = 1101. My best overall performance is with 494 x 2.0D = 988, with tRD = 9 and tRFC = 48. My latter configuration is about 5% faster in real world performance. This is comparing apples & oranges, as we are running different cpus. I'm severely limited by my cpu's maximum 7x cpu multiplier.

With many of your settings on AUTO, you're system will still not be running at optimal performance levels. For example, manually setting the proper STATIC tREAD and tRFC values will have a noticeable impact on overall system stability and performance. These settings will not necessarily be identical at all cpu and memory settings/straps.
