  • Weird FSB limit of 206mhz on GA-EG31M-S1

Hi. I have coupled this board with an E5200 and have had some very weird overclocking results.. GA-EG31M-S2 (rev. 1.0)

With 2 SATA drives connected and 0 IDE drives, I cannot push the FSB past 206mhz.

With 2 SATA drives connected and any IDE device, I can get the FSB as high as I want. (currently at 310mhz).

What exactly is going on? It certainly might explain the discrepancies in users' reviews here: Customer Reviews Of GIGABYTE GA-EG31M-S2 LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

p.s. I have tried the 2 most recent bioses and it doesn't matter if the IDE device is a HDD or Optical, any/either is required for an overclock.

You know, I have my ex58-ud5 board locking up with a floppy controller error any time i push the blck past 180.

I wonder if you've stumbled upon some super weird engineering problem with these gb boards.

I'll have to grab a floppy and test.

It is super weird that any IDE device opens up the possibility of higher FSB speeds... ????

A comprehensive google search has given me no clues on this one.

But I bet this is the reason some users cannot overclock at all with this board (users that have SATA only)

Can somebody from Gigabyte address this issue please?

Do any other forum members have a clue what's going on here?

        thanks

        TO CLARIFY:

Without using an IDE drive, any FSB setting higher than +5% results in a failure to post.

Sounds similar to this issue on the EP31 DS3L:
