• Overclocking EP45-UD3R & Q9650 to 4.00ghz+

Before I start, I want to say that this is my first time overclocking but have been building computers for years (this computer being #8) and would not have gotten thus far with out the information on this forum. I feel that I'm getting very close to 4.00ghz stabilized but fail the Prime95 "Small FFTs" on Core 4 after about 20 minutes, FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expecting less then 0.4. I have been able to pass the Memtest86+ for 2 hours, OCCT for 1 hour and Prime95 Blend for 4 hours. My temperature's never go higher then 53 Celsius, so heating does not seem to be a problem. I have tried to clock my RAM to the rated 4-4-4-12 @ 1.90v without success, but want to get the processor stable before I try again. Looking forward to your assistance and getting this build a little more stable.

Re: Overclocking EP45-UD3R & Q9650 to 4.00ghz+

I do advise you run Memtest86+ for at least 5-10 full passes so you can find out if this is indeed the issue or not.

I see some voltage issues you may have set to low, but you should see if this is the memory first

Here is what I would advise for you to run your setup at 4Ghz. Your ram may not run the needed 900Mhz with the spec timings of 444-12. I actually doubt they will so later try 544-12 or 554-12, in the end you may just have to run 555-12 or 555-15 to keep them stable

Re: Overclocking EP45-UD3R & Q9650 to 4.00ghz+

Thanks for the information as I have a couple of question now that I have had MemTest86+ running for the last 6 hrs and no error. The memory test will continue for a few more hours as I'm at work. If no errors occur with MemTest86+, should I only adjusting the CPU Vcore and CPU Termination voltage as per your recommendation? Also what stress tests would you recommend after these changes have been made and for how long? Thanks you very much in advance!!

Re: Overclocking EP45-UD3R & Q9650 to 4.00ghz+

your mch needs more voltage most likely. test by dropping the multiplier and seeing if you still have stability. if it still fails at the same fsb but dropped multiplier, then your mch is the problem. if it passes, then your chip is the problem and it needs move vcore. quad cores really stress the mch. think at least 1.3 and closer to 1.4.

also loosen the ram timings anyway. the truth is ram timings have pretty much zero effect on pc performance contrary to what ram manufacturers would like you to believe. loosen them, get stability, then go back and think about tightening them.

Re: Overclocking EP45-UD3R & Q9650 to 4.00ghz+

We have plenty of tools here for testing stability, really up to you to decide >>

I use Orthos and Memtest86+ myself, HCI Designs Memtest and Intel Burn Test.

Yes, if your memory passes then it is fine and you can leave it and move on to testing your CPU and or CPU/Ram together within windows with other programs. Then based on how things fail we can advise you of how you need to proceed

Re: Overclocking EP45-UD3R & Q9650 to 4.00ghz+

Status report & recommendation: Had MemTest86+ run for 12.5 hour with 26 passes and no error's. Memory is good and I adjusted the voltages as indicated below, with your recommendations. Ran Prime95 "Small FFTs" for a couple of hours and all seemed to be good. I did notice my temperatures rise a little, on average for all cores, 50 degrees Celsius with a maximum of 55 degrees Celcius on core #1. I'm assuming this rise is due to the voltage increase and should not be a problem at these temperatures, correct? Also the voltage was at 1.360v on idle and on average 1.312v for load. My CPU has a maximum VID Voltage of 1.3625v, should I be OK with the 1.360v at idle? You also mention that you use Orthos for stress testing, what setting in Orthos do you use and how long should I run to establish if my system is stable?

Code:
>>> CPU
Load-Line Calibration .................: [Disabled]
CPU Vcore ...............1.27500V......: 1.40000V
CPU Termination ........ 1.200V........: 1.320V
CPU PLL .................1.500V........: 1.570V
CPU Referen .............0.760V........: [Auto]
Thanks again and I do apologies for asking such specific questions, but this has been a big learning experience for me and I really do value your expertise.

Re: Overclocking EP45-UD3R & Q9650 to 4.00ghz+

26 passes is more then plenty, sounds like your ram settings are good to go!

Ya, those temps are fine for sure. If you hit 70-75+ using Prime then you have to worry

VID is just the max that any CPU will be sent from Intel programmed as, your actual MAX is 1.5v before hardware failures can result per Intel documents. So yes you are fine for sure

If you would like less of a difference between idle/load and what you set in the BIOS you can enable LLC and then you will be able to set less voltage there

I run Orthos Blend for 8-24 hours

Re: Overclocking EP45-UD3R & Q9650 to 4.00ghz+

LSDMEASAP, had a chance to perform some stress testing on my system over the weekend. Ran Prime95 "blend" for 15.5 hours and no error, maximum temperatures reached on cores #1@57, #2@52, #3@52 and #4@54 degrees Celsius. I like how this has been shaping up and have learned a ton from you and this web site. I do want to start tweaking the memory a little as you suggested in your first reply. When I try the 5-4-4-12 & 5-5-4-12 timing, do I need to adjust any voltages or any other setting that you may suggest? Thanks again and looking forward to reply!!
