Skew would be a valid thing to try, sure.

I've found that anything over 350 on either value causes a failed boot, even with everything else at stock. YMMV though.

Also worth trying is DRAM timing skw, it may be just as influential.

Remember that skew delays for a short period the signal it is effecting. Eg MCH skew alters the sync of the FSB signal compared to everything else, DRAM does the same on the DRAM traces. The end result is to hopefully restore the right signal timings after a heavy oc has pushed them out of tolerance. Usually these settings don't need altering because mobo designers "snake" traces to make an equal length so hopefully all signals get there at the right time.

Very basic guide to clock skew and some situations it might be useful in: http://www.overclock.net/faqs/119265...save-your.html

      • Re: GA-EP45-UD3P - Won't boot with 450FSB

RAM Driving Strength, rather than being a timing, is the fource by which a board will strobe and address RAM. Think of the strengths as like having to apply increasing force to get a physical object to move.

Although Gigabyte have labeled their Driving Strength as RAM speeds, there's no reason why this should be the case. Different RAM IC's from different manufacturers can prefer different driving strengths. DFI have used both "Weak, Normal, Strong" and numbers -14 to +14 to represent the changes.

If you have trouble booting, it would be interesting to know if another of the driving strengths will work, or if Auto is able to tweak even further than the pre-determined values available. Start with DS @ 667. Then try 800, 1200 and 1333.

The results would be interesting to see.

Edit** Try enabling and disablink DRAM Write Training with 1066 DS enabled, it may make a difference if you try and fail at all the other driving strengths.
Forgot to add.. Good job so far!

OC-1200 was a BIG no no, complaining about corrupt files etc when trying to boot Windows.
800Mhz however has passed a quick 5x IBT, going to try DRAM Write Training disabled with 1066 now...

Was a no go that one psycho101, froze in Windows.

Just been having a play with 530FSB, doesn't seem far off but wanted to leave Prime testing 520FSB overnight.

Can I run 3 lots of Prime (Blend/Small/Large) at the same time to try and reduce testing time (I know I can run them OK, wondered if it considered good testing procedure though)?

Not dangerous, but not a good idea. With all three tests going, they'll be arguing over resources, meaning the CPU and RAM might not get 100% stressed, as load swaps from one instance to the other, with a lower total load in between. It could also cause odd behaviour that usually wouldn't occur, such as crashes from software errors rather than hardware ones.

I've have 520FSB going for 13 hrs with Prime95 blend, tons of IBT's runs... I'm using MCH Core of 1.34 and a CPU skew of 200 or 250. I'll put up my full BIOS settings if I make it to 24 hours.

I have read here and there where people claim that our northbridge is not made to do 2000Mhz+.. I can't find anything concrete. I may try and nail a stable 550FSB.. but I'm not sure I will use it day to day. I think 520 is getting close to my confort level.
I need to do a Lsdmeasap finger test on the memory and NB... if I can't keep it there 10 seconds, then I am pushing it to far.

I've had no problems with driving strength = OC-1200 when my memory speeds were greater than ddr2-1000.
I've done minimal testing with 800 vs 1066 driving strengths and haven't noticed any stability or performance differences.

My current setting is at "1066" with my 984MHz speeds.

I swear that Lsd told me that the EP45-UD3P NB could handle as much as 2230FSB...

I suppose the P45's like a CPU in many ways as regards to OC-ability. Some people will luck out and get one that can do 600 FSB + and others might top out closer to 500-550.

I've seen a few people with exceptional CPU's and RAM get a 620 FSB boot on all auto settings (not advised, but impressive).

ARGH!!! my 520FSB (@ 1.34 MCH Core) attempt after 14 hours of Prime95 and IBT's.. I decided to play a game of UT3... that lasted 3 minutes.. with the BlueScreen-O-Death.. lol

Now I'm trying 520FSB (@ 1.36 MCH Core) like D-and-W.. sigh.. I really wanted to show you guys that CPU skew can make a difference. Maybe when I go for 550 it will matter more.

So anyone have guidelines on how much MCH Core is really too much? or are we already way past that lol
