Q8200S Overclock on EP45-UD3R 3.64Ghz @ 1.275v

There hasn't been a lot of talk about the Q8200S, so I thought I might share my experience with one that was given to me. Please note that I am relatively new to overlocking, so I'm sure the results are more based on the processor than my overclocking skill.

Here's the specs to my rig:

Mobo: Gigabyte EP45-UD3R
CPU: Q8200S R0 revision
Heatsink: Xigmatek S1283
Ram: G Skill PC8500 4gb kit
Video: Radeon HD4850 w/Accelero S1 with Turbo Module
HD: WD Caviar Black 1tb
Case: Antec P183
Fans all replaced with S-Flex 1200 rpm

I currently have it running pretty stable at 3.64Ghz (520 x 7) at 1.275v. It runs a little hot maxing out at 66* on one of the cores with the rest of the cores just under 60*. I had it stable at 3.2Ghz at stock voltage of 1.165v running prime95 for 20 hours... ran cooler maxing out mid 50C. After resetting my HS I was able to drop the temp slightly, and currently have it stable at 3.5Ghz (500 x 7) at 1.175v. Running it on Prime95 right now, see if its still up when I get home.

I was wondering because this is one of the low TDP processors, would this kind of voltage/heat damage the processor? I don't plan on running my PC at this setting, just want to see what it can do.

wow thats pretty good. I dont know much about overclocking stuff, but Psycho101 will jump in shortly and talk all about that chip and board. i have my 8200 at 3.2ghz stable and plan on going up to 3.4ghz when i get back from my vacation that im on right now. i would be afraid to go up to 3.6ghz tho...my personal opinion

I don't plan on running the chip at this speed, as I don't really need that much power. If my current OC at 3.5Ghz @ 1.175v can stay stable I'll probably keep it at that. I've gotten it as high as 3.71Ghz that would boot into Windows but would crash after a couple minutes running Prime95.

I was a little worried at first when I got this chip, after hearing all the people trashing the Q8200 and its 7x multiplier. Really though about selling it and getting a Q6600. But after seeing what this is capable of I'm glad i stuck with the Q8200S as a buddy of mine just picked a Q6600 G0 and is struggling to get his stable at 3.2Ghz.

That's a great overclock! I have a standard Q8200, and my limit is 3.4GHz, with 1.3625V and LLC enabled. I can get 3.2GHz, on auto reference volts, with 1.2750V LLC disabled, but wasn't happy at that and decided to push it to the max.

Most I've ever got is 3.65GHz, with 1.45V and LLC, and it boots into windows and won't even complete SuperPI 1M, let alone Prime95.

No doubt your exceptional VID is helping you out.

Its lower TDP is actually a huge benefit. Your maximum operating temperature is actually higher than a standard chip. Yours is rated up to 76.3c, where as mine is only rated to 71.4c (M1 stepping). You can check these details at Intels CPU info site: Processor Spec Finder

You will do no harm running it at 3.6GHz with those voltages and temperatures. You are still OK to give the chip up to 1.3625V if you wish, as long as temps permit. Low TDP processors are designed for eco friendly operation, and are great for HTPC's, where cooling is usually poor due to cramped case conditions.

Hey thats really good and I heard the low pwer ones didnt clock as well.
My memory limits the speed I can get but after checking around here no one had any real recommendations for memory running at over 500 fsb with quads.
I wasnt too worried as the 8200 regular doesnt go much above 3.6 on air.

I used to run mine at 3.5ghz for a couple of months, it was stable but I get better memory timings at 490mhz.so 3.5 should be np for u at that volt and temp.
Highest boot I had was 3.6 but totally unstable.. something similar to psycho above.

Whats the exact Gskill 8500 memory product and what voltage and timings are u using on it and also mbrd bios version is F6? thx.

The 3.64 screenie ,how long did you test it for at 3.64?
was it open case or closed?
The reason Im asking is more to do with the board and chipset limitations with quads on air.
I made an enquiry a few months ago about advice on memory that would run well at 530x2 fsb ie 1060mhz on the ud3 there were some replies but no definite examples.

In fact I havent seen any posts with people running over 2000mhz(500) fsb for an extended period on 775 quads on air .

As you might have guessed :) im v interested in the memory and fsb . I cant say for sure if yours will run happily at 3.5 but no reason why not mine did for some time and yours needs a lower core voltage.
20x7(140mhz ) cpu speed might be worth investing in different memory for me depending on cost and how "tight" the memory will run.

The memory I'm using is F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK.

I didn't really test it too long at 3.64Ghz, but did have it Prime95 stable at 3.6Ghz for 5 hours. I was running the memory at slightly looser timings, don't remember exactly what they were, but at 2.2V. Haven't done much over the last couple days as I went back to a lower clock speed of 3.3Ghz.

At 3.3 Ghz, I'm able to run it at pretty much stock everything and my max temp now is 51*C on one of the core and the rest around 45*C.

too bad (for me) that your back at 3.3 but whatever feels good to you.
Yeh somewhere around 470 ref higher voltages seem to be needed on the regular 8200 also+ those temps are lower than what I would get at stock speeds.
