Re: CPU cooler efficiency
Those temps seem fine, a big part of temps comes down to the ambient temp. so take review temps like a gran of salt, a good indication but not concrete.
Also alot will come down to the cooler you are using, also the fan on that cooler, all of these are variables.
Load temps are really what matters anyway.
the orientation of the cooler will make a difference, but only 2-4 degs AFAIK.

Re: CPU cooler efficiency
Cooler orientation won't make much difference. Pressure and convection in the heatpipes will cause the heat carried away to be pretty uniform. It is fine to have it in an upright tower case.
As for orientation of the two "sides" of fins on the Kama Angke, the corner should point upward toward the rear case fan and the PSU/top extraction fan. That way, one side of fins is directly infront of the rear extraction, and the other is right next to the PSU intake or roof exhaust, giving a slight push-pull action.Coolermaster CM 690 II advance Case

Re: CPU cooler efficiency
Actually due to the layout of the i7 chips, laying the heatpipes across the cores results in better results, between 2-6C as mentioned before. The heatpipes should be lay horizontally across your CPU, not vertically. Since you have the Scythe Kama Angle, however, your heatpipes do not lay directly across the base of the cooler, so it may not matter as much for you. I have a TRUE cooler though, and it matters for me.
Check out this X-bit article that talks about it: Prolimatech Megahalems and 12 Other Coolers for Intel Core i7 Overclocking (page 7) - X-bit labs
A quote from the article:
Just like Prolimatech Megahalems, both Ultra-120 eXtreme coolers proved more efficient when they were installed with the heatpipes going across the processor heat-spreader.i7 920 C0/C1 3841A

Re: CPU cooler efficiency
By cooler orientation I believe the OP was refering to having the tower clloer either with its base parallel to the floor, or parallel to the side of the case in a tower system.
I wasn't aware that heatpipe orientation made a difference on the i7, but I don't have an i7 to test. Seems no reason why it wouldn't be true.
The Kama Angle does indeed have a non conformist heat pipe lay oout so it as you say might not make much difference on heatpipe contact with the IHS.Coolermaster CM 690 II advance Case
