  • New Build: Q8400 + EP45-UD3P + HyperX -- Possible Memory/OS Install issues?

    Originally I had the following hardware: Asus P5B / E6600 / 8800GTS / Antec TruePower550. I purchased the following upgrades: EP45-UD3P / Q8400 / GTX260 / Corsair TX750W PSU.

Here is the chain of events that leads to now:
    1. Bought the Mobo/CPU from Frys and installed them and ran my original Vista install. After updates things were running "ok".
    2. Received my GPU from newegg and there were issues from the start which were things like games not running and newest drivers making windows crash. I needed a new PSU and decided to install Win 7 on my two raptors in raid0.
    3. This had its own issues because it was Win7 and I decided to go back to Vista x64 and WinUpdate was unable to install the GPU drivers but I installed from nvidia. Later I realized that the mobo from frys was used w/o a install CD and after calling Frys they said to bring it all back for a new mobo.
    4. After getting the new mobo I decided I should reinstall Vista (even though it was the exact same board) and this is where I started to run into issues.
    5. First try I ran a key finder to make sure I had entered my business key for this computer that corrupted the registry. Try 2, at the first reboot it said a .sys file was corrupted (maybe dvd drives lens was dirty). Try 3 things worked and Vista installed. Again my GPU update from WinUpdate failed and from nvidia worked after a restart.
    6. Things seemed fine till the next night when I went to mount an iso using daemon tools, this resulted in dtool crashing. I decided to check the event logs after a second try which showed me an error about MMC unable to load and crashed interviewer.
    7. I restarted, mounted correctly but suddenly launching anything 32-bit like ie7 gave me the following error: "Entry point getsysteminfi count not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll" again I restarted and things worked fine.
    8. I bought WoW and tried to install it and had the following error: "An error was detected while verifying the contents of the file "C:\Users\Public\Games\World of Warcraft\Data\enUS\backup-enUS.MPQ". There may be a problem with your system, or with the drive at C:\. You can attempt to install again. If this problem persists, please contact Blizzard Technical Support." After trying the webinstaller and restarting which I read off of some google posts I read that people had memory issues that caused this.
    9. I decided to run Memtest86 v3.5. (I had one pair of the ram about 6mo before the second pair) I ran the test on all 4 in slot0, then I ran the old pair in 0/2 and 1/3 and the same with new pair. These all passed, but when I went to test all 4 Memtest would run for a few seconds then reboot.
    10. So I decided to install WoW w/ my old pair installed and WoW installed perfectly fine. After research I found out this v3.5 failed on 4gigs of ram. I got the newest bios from this site F9l and then only set SPD 800 DRAM V 2.0 and raid and I got Memtest86+ v2.11 and ran it for 2 passes on all 4 sticks w/o errors.
    11. When I got back into windows I was able to run WoW at its highest settings and even Fallout 3. But then when I went to install Fallou 3 v1.5 I ran into install issues. After a reboot I decided to try IE8 instead and this would fail before it got passed the first stage of the install and never succeed off the winupdate either.
    12. Next restart Fallout 3 1.5 installed fine and the game ran fine as well, but other things were failing here and there like adobe installer and others. During all this WoW and Fallout 3 ran just fine.
    13. In the code below is my current settings which I changed to because of this forum, the main two changes were MCH 1.2v and PCIE 100, but thing still seem unstable. Cant "save" in ie at times, activex to install crashing ie, etc.
    14. One other thing is some shutdowns my HDDs are grinding away for about 5min before the computer shuts down.
This is where I am now and unsure of what to do next, could I have bad ram? bad mobo? bad install of vista? still bad settings? Is it just a bad connection somewhere?

    Thanks in advanced.

Try system memory multiplier at 2.00B, just to see for stability so that you can at least install your software properly.

I have made this change, I dont know if IE8 is a good program to test if things are going ok because that just keeps failing. Fallout 3 is another game that failes a bit so I am thinking about some other game to test out as well.

Below are some suggestions. You may well need more MCH core than 1.200V especially if you have all 4 RAM slots populated.

          Re: New Build: Q8400 + EP45-UD3P + HyperX -- Possible Memory/OS Install issues?

I did the above changes, things were running ok. Then suddenly when adobe reader would try to open multiple windows I would have a nvidia related BSOD. So I decided to add in my other two 160g raptors. Put those on the intel raid in raid0. Installed Vista x64 and now nothing but issues, Installers not wanting to run, windows installer failing, programs not running. Do I really have ram thats gone bad? or a bad mobo?

edit: Ran 6 passes of Memtest86+ V2.11 over night on the current bios settings over night without any errors.

            Re: New Build: Q8400 + EP45-UD3P + HyperX -- Possible Memory/OS Install issues?

Other thoughts are if my CPU is bad? But would I have gotten so far into the windows install with a bad CPU? Maybe a bad GPU? Running out of ideas, I guess I could put up my old board and test parts in that, but that wouldnt test if the RAID settings I have are the issue.

              Re: New Build: Q8400 + EP45-UD3P + HyperX -- Possible Memory/OS Install issues?

I will try any other suggestions you guys have but tonight I am going to do the following:

              1. Setup old pc on a table with all original parts: Asus P5B / 8800GTS / Antec TruePower550 / 4x1GB Kingston HyperX / 1x 500gb WD Blue.
              2. Install Vista x64 and let everything update and try IE8 and several other installs. If things work, RAM is good.
              3. I will add in the GTS260 and try to uninstall all installs and try to install again see if it is successful. If things run good this should clear the GPU.
              4. I will add in the new PSU and run the same set of tests as #3 uninstall/install. Again if this goes will then PSU is good.
              5. I will install the Q8400 and do a fresh install of Vista and install all things from steps #3 and #4. If this goes well then CPU is cleared.

If steps 1-5 are successful, this will lead me to believe the mobo is either faulty or that I have some settings that something does not like on my EP45-UD3P.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions I should try before I start my tests tonight. Please please chime in with any ideas you have this is getting kinda frustrating

Thanks to all in advance again.

There is always a chance that your RAM isn't compatible with the UD3P.

To save a little time, I'd do the GFX card last, as this is the least likely to be at fault. I would also take a chance and say that the CPU is good. My experiences with dead CPU's is that the board either refuses to start, or the CPU is detected fine in the BIOS, but either on verifying DMI pool data or starting to load the os, it falls over.

I'd also take the UD3P out of the case and test that with both the old and new kit. You may have a short between board and case causing this strange fault.

Good luck. Get some beer in if you can, it sounds like it'll take a few hours to sort things.

Totally forgot to add that I went and purchased an Asus Twelve Hundred, thinking that either a short or heat is the issue with my board and I dont believe that is the cause of this... What are some good rams that are known to be good with this board?

The thing is if the ram works on the other motherboard I'm not sure thats going to prove anything, maybe I'm over thinking this.

also adding a new step: 0. Purchase some ******ss before starting. :)

                    Re: New Build: Q8400 + EP45-UD3P + HyperX -- Possible Memory/OS Install issues?

If you can verify all other components on your old board, and they test good, then by the process of elimination, and a little bit of guesswork, if the same combo fail on the UD3P, I'd conclude RAM.

Getting hold of a stick of DDR2 from somewhere would help to verify this though.

Known good RAM so far include Corsair (TWIN2X4096-6400C5 and TWIN2X4096-8500C5), Gskill PC2-8500 (blue heat spreaders) and Crucial Balistix Tracer. There are others though. A little look through peoples signatures on the forum will yield an even bigger list, as a lot of people here have a UD3P/R.

Well I guess I have a nother step added that I will do in parallel. Friend of mine has a working 2x2gig Corsair that hes put aside since he recently bought himself another pair (faster mhz/cl) and he is going to bring it by for me to test (and keep if it works) its either 800 or 1066 XMS2. Guess it will not hurt to pop that in. I am guessing I should reset everything to auto after this?

Do you happen to have the settings for Corsair XMS2s here :)

                        It depends on the model. PC2-6400C5 is 5-5-5-18 @ 1.8V, PC2-6400C4 is 4-4-4-12 @ 1.9V and the PC2-8500 is 5-5-5-15 @ 2.1V.

Before you install the RAM, clear the CMOS using the two pins above the case button pin cluster and you should be able to boot into the BIOS to set everything properly.

With 2 x 2GB you should be able to run stock settings with 1.2V MCH Core. Use the other subtimings and Static tRead as before, and set your RAM multiplier tho the correct values for the RAM, so 2.4B for DDR2-800 and 3.2B for DDR2-1066.

Well he actually got me the Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C4DHX. Guess these are the Dominators and are huge with that heat sink. 4-4-4-12 2.1V ver 3.2.

Is that going to work with my board? Or too high of a Voltage?

Yes, they have the Direct Heat Exchange spreaders, and are rather tall but should be fine. No RAM is rated for a voltage that the UD3P can't supply. Those modules should work fine at 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1V They may also do upwards of DDR-1000 at 5-5-5-15 @ 2.1V, should you want to overclock past 425-450 FSB. Nice RAM indeed.
