  • I am upgrading from a E8500 to a Q9650

    Hello All,

I am going to be upgrading from my E8500 to the quad core Q9650. It should be here in a couple of days. (17 July)

Is there anything special that I have to know prior to dropping my chip in the socket.

I am running Vista 64Bit Ultimate. Here are the steps I am thinking of. Please let me know if I am doing something incorrect or if I am missing items.

    1. Reset BIOS and LOAD OPTIMIZED DEFAULTS
    2. Boot into Windows
    3. Shut Down
    4. Unplug all power from the computer and shut off PSU
    5. Remove CPU heatsink and take E8500 out very carefully!
    6. Replace with Q9650
    7. Reinstall CPU heatsink
    8. Boot into BIOS and LOAD OPTIMIZED DEFAULTS
    9. Reboot
    10. Overclock like a MoFo
    11. Profit
    12. ???

Thanks for taking a look and for your help!

    -Jason

You will be fine to just swap out the CPU as you've detailed above. No re-install of vista will be needed.

You may want to switch off the PSU at the wall but leave it plugged in. You can then earth yourself regularly to the case so you don't zap the CPU's with some deadly (to CPU's) static electricity. As you have what appears to be a picture of a pair of P51 Mustang's on your wall I'm guessing you may be in the US. If you don't have switches on your wall sockets, simply switch the PSU off at the switch on the back.

Step 12 could be "Collect Underpants".

Thanks for the tip. that is a good idea...last think I want to do is fry my CPU without even trying to overclock it. ;-)

The picture on my wall is of 2 T-34C TurboMentors. The aircraft I flew in flight school in the Navy.

I took the picture from a chase plane while two classmates were flying their formation Solo.

Nice planes! Very similar in profile to the P51. Sounds like a great job, flying those things for a job. Hopefully you were in something a little faster and more heavily armed and armored when flying into battle. Still an awesome training aircraft though .

I'm sure your build will go with out a hitch. Let us know how you get on.

Your plan is fine! I would go ahead and clear the CMOS before loading optimized defaults, other than that you should be good to go.

Good luck with the switch, and be careful not to bend any of your CPU socket pins
