  • Help: EP45-UD3P + 8GB OC

    Am running 2 sets of G.Skill F2-6400CL4D-4GBPIB (PI Black) and have recently found the time to overclock and thoroughly test the DRAM.
    My problem is that while XP boots and runs fine at these settings, LinX would fail after about 20 minutes. I prefer LinX because Prime95 (x64, custom blend) passed the 2-hour mark with no error. LinX passed 20 rounds both at stock CPU/memory settings and when only the CPU was overclocked so I think it's safe to say that components are good to begin with. I need help in fine-tuning the board.
    Before anyone asked, I had to raise the ICH core because I was getting file corruptions at stock voltage, even at stock speeds. I think my USB keyboard's built-in audio has something to do with it (not enough power for the headphones?).
    I had to RMA a revision 1.1 board (bad LAN2) and noticed that board was able to run the same modules up to 458MHZ without having to lower MCH reference like I had to with this 1.6 unit. Different revision = different OC? Maybe not. I didn't stress test much then.

    Personally I leave all timings on auto, XMP profile1, multiplier as needed, tRD set nalually, and let BIOS scale timings to match memory frequency. CAS latency is preserved and may need to be set manually.
    I've seen poeple with less memory and higher MCH so this may also worth being looked at.

      I'll try out your all-auto timings as soon as I get home. Had a feeling that the problem has something to do with the timings.
      About higher MCH, when I first raised the memory clock from the stock 400MHz, Prime95 failed in only a few seconds. Bumping up the MCH core didn't help at all until I lowered the MCH reference from 0.76V to 0.72V (VTT 1.2V).
      Slightly OT: What fan do you use with the Mugen? How's the DIMM clearance on that monster? Am thinking of getting one, not sure if the fan would interfere with tall heatspreaders.

        I wasn't saying the timings is the problem, but BIOS seems to scale them properly, so just to eliminate the possibility it is something with the timings.
        There was recently someone with G.Skill memory that actually had to lower MCH Core to 0.95v to be able to run 2x2GB, if I remember correctly. Worth trying also.

        With the Mugen I use the low profile Corsair XMS2 PC2-6400 memory, can't use the G.Skill PC2-8500 PI I have, and I still need to remove the fan or lift it up a little to have access to slots 1 & 2. There's a photo here. It's quite tall so probably won't interfere with anything but I didn't like the retention kit. Is it that different from the BARAM?

          Just finished an hour LinX run and it looks stable with all subtimings on auto. Now, I just need to figure out which entry is causing the errors. Drop me a line whenever you're in town 'cause I owe you a cold one, man.
          I've seen that picture before ("Whoa! A golden Mugen!?"), just didn't realize it was yours. That thing is huge! The Baram isn't anywhere that big. I've got about a couple milimeters between the fan and the top of the Pi Black, but it's only because the EP43-UD3L is about 3cm narrower than the EP45-UD3P, the DIMM slots much closer to the CPU socket. I don't think the Baram is as effective though, 76C LinX in a 28C room. Planning on shrouding it because of the air leak. Will do that after I'm done with the board settings. DIMM removal isn't an issue, but the backplate mounting is a PITA especially with only a pair of hands. Anyway, nice rig you have there, man.

            You loosend the standard timings so it must be one of the advanced, perheps tRFC which to my calculation had to be 59 (896/800x52 rounded up,) that was the only change you made?

            Nah the mugen is silver/metal that was due to the cam settings and light.
            BARAM only 1c above the mugen according to this review. The mugen is not less PITA I can assure you. If I knew the screws have to be screwed from the back I wouldn't have bought it.

              No, I haven't tinkered with the subtimings, have just returned from an errand and left the system running LinX on auto subtimings. Going on 3 hours and still chugging along. Looking good. Too tired to mess around with it, probably will have all weekend to do that, fingers crossed.
              I know it was most likely the lighting on the Mugen. It just looked different, that's all. I got the Baram partly because of X-bit Labs and, coming from a 6-year-old P4 with awful stock cooling, I'm not complaining. I thought of the Mugen 2 for a rig I'm planning for my brother. Either that, NH-U12P, or the upcoming Megahalem Shadow.
              Lol. And *I* thought Baram's mounting is bad. Despite that, I still prefer backplates to push-pins. Could never get used to those lil' suckers, no matter how I tried.

                Timings represent time, the time is cycles multiplies by 1/frequency. In fact it's the other way, the times in the SPD are given in time and the BIOS/memset translate it to cycles for a given frequency, you can see that if you erad the SPD with SPDTool.
                In terms of time: Xcyles x 1/freqA = Ycycles x 1/freqB therefore Ycycles = (Xcycles x 1/freqA) devided by 1/freqB = Xcycles x freqB / freqA, simple. It's only rough but you can see it is close to what the different profiles show, and surely beats guessing.

                There's an offset for part of the timings shown in MemSet, see Memory Timings Explained (scroll to see below the picture).

                Backplates are great just not when you have to screw the HS from the back.

                  Thanks to Chike, I got 448 stable for Prime95 large/blend nightly tests + LinX + some exercises in random RAR de/compression (Psycho101's excellent idea in the other thread). With renewed confidence, I then decided to go for 476 ("Pffft!" you say? Well, I *will* eventually get to 500. LOL) with all-auto timings so that I could check for the appropriate numbers in Memset. BSOD right off the gates. Increasing MCH core was asking for a serving of P95 failure. Only by bringing down MCH ref a notch to 0.70V (VTT 1.2V) is all it took to be an hour P95/LinX stable so far. That LSD guy sure knows his stuff.
                  Don't know if it's only with my board, my revision, or with UD3P in general, but it seems like MCH reference is the key to almost every memory issue I encounter. Anyway, just wanted to update my situation. Hopefully, it'll be smooth sailing from here so that I won't have to keep bumping up the thread. LOL.

                    Ya MCH Ref is the key to a lot of P45's instability, I am not sure why either because some need more and others less. I guess it is all due to inconsistency in silicon of the chipsets themselves which leaves Gigabyte no way of setting a working stable setting for all boards?

                    Not sure why it is though, just my guess. I do know it is key though a lot of times but not always. Some are fine left in auto
