Gigabyte G31M-S2L - Once overclocked fine, and now it can't?

For some reason, whenever I clock my e5200 above 2.5ghz the bios on my G31M-S2L it just reboots twice and falls back on the last successful settings. I can underclock the cpu although it's a little screwy sometimes. It's really strange because when I first got the computer I was able to get my e5200 up to 3.0ghz and it worked perfectly just as long as I had my memory at 800mhz. Now all the sudden, no matter what I try, it fails to overclock.

ALSO... I found out this motherboard is a G31M-ES2L, not G31M-S2L

that might make a big difference?

I'm not familiar with your mobo/bios, but the following (P35/EP45 info) might help:
1) If you have a bios option to "Load OPTIMIZED Settings" do it.
2) Follow the suggested settings in this post where several AUTO settings are manually set for a stock setup.
3) Manually set your cpu multiplier and cpu host frequency to stock settings.
4) Manually set your memory timings to their SPD settings for your memory speed.
5) Save settings and exit.
6) Make sure that your system is stable.
7) Start overclocking, making incremental changes. For overclocking, you will have to increase some of the voltages.

If you need more help, follow steps 1 through 4 in the above link to provide additional information.

You will need to provide your bios settings for more help. A quick google search using:
G31M-S2L "bios template"
turned up several generic bios templates.
This post can be copied to a text editor where you can enter your bios settings for you to post with. Whatever bios template you borrow, do NOT use any of the pre-existing settings, manually enter your settings, including any AUTO settings. If you find a "better" bios template, use it for posting your settings.

hey. I tried setting the voltages manually. Set all voltages to default.. got to 2.51ghz on the normal voltage for cpu. couldn't do 2.52ghz on the normal voltages. I tried fsb + 0.1 and different cpu voltages (just a little higher) but no go. I was able to get the auto voltage to work fine before, i have no idea why it would just stop working.

thanks for the help though, this overclocking problem is making me pull my hair out :P

I had to cut out a lot of the stuff from the template because half of it I wasn't even able to change in my bios.

[edit] wow i'm dumb, I just realized you can access more bios settings by pushing ctrl + f1. I tried setting everything memory related to the default (not auto) but no luck.

i've tried just about everything now. It's almost as if there is some kind of hardcoded limit of 2.51ghz before it just shuts down.

What is the version # of your mobo? This is usually found in the lower left (rear) corner of your mobo.
Which bios version are you using?
What memory modules are you using? 2x1GB? 1x2GB? Make? Model #? Maximum rated voltage?
Include a link to your memory's specifications.

You always need to press CTRL + F1 from the main bios screen to access all overclocking options.

If you have any problems, post your bios settings and the specific problem: won't boot, BSOD, stability, etc.

You can try lowering the Cpu Multiplier to 11 if there are problems. If your system is stable, gradually increase the multiplier by 0.5x and try again.

You will need to perform extended stability testing to insure that your system is fully stable.

I'm using rev 1.0 (i'm pretty sure) of the mobo. I'm using F9C (updated from @bios).

I'm only using one of the 2gb sticks of ram because I can't fit the other under my fan (the heatsinks on these are pretty big!).

Also, the weirdest thing, I have the cpu OC'd to 3.00ghz using the EasyTune6 utility which runs in windows. I ran prime95 for 7 hours and played a lot of fallout 3 and had no problems. Unfortunately I can't clock it above 3.2-3.3ghz using that utility or it'll just BSOD. I know I can clock it way above that in the bios and run perfectly stable (of course, if it worked at all).

BTW, about 80% of the time I try to OC it in the bios above 2.5ghz it will reboot, look like its about to start up, then just reboot again. Sometimes it'll freeze and I'd have to go press the reset button to restart the computer.

[edit]yep no go on those settings :(. It just did the same thing it does every time:Starts up and right before the time the beep would go off and the text pops up on the screen, it reboots again.

Please post the full settings you are trying that are failing so we can advise changes for you to try.

Sorry to jump in the middle here, but just wanted to let you know it is much easier for someone to help you if you post your BIOS settings each time that fail so that person can see what exactly you tried that did not work
