  • 8 gigs of g.skill in UD3LR? watercooling for northbridge?

    Hi All,

I'm an old school overclocker with plenty of experience but I've been out of the game since about 2004.

Just got myself an EP45-UD3LR and am using an E6600 @ 3.2GHz for now but will be purchasing a 9550 quad in a few weeks.

I need to buy some RAM as I'm using some borrowed corsair sticks for now.

This is the RAM I am considering:
    G.Skill DDR2 PC8800 5-5-5-15, 1.9V, 2 x 2Gb
    F28800CL5D-4GBPi

Judging by comments from others on this forum I assume this should be suitable?

Also, I am seriously considering getting 8 gigs of this stuff as I will be doing a lot of audio recording work with this machine.

How far do you guys think I could push this stuff if I'm using 8 gigs (4 x 2Gb) of it? And what could I expect if using just 4Gb?

Also, I'm thinking of dusting off my old water cooling gear and giving it a run with this new board. How much more overclock could I expect by water cooling the northbridge?

Sorry for so many questions in one go. :-)

8GB will be fine, but you wont be able to run them much above 1000Mhz if that. Just keep that in mind

8GB is good if you need it for your audio work, but it will hinder your overclocks. So you should make up your mind if you really need 8GB or not.

Q9550 can normally do 3.8-4Ghz on water, not sure about air though. Cooling the NB can help, so if you do have blocks for that and plan to do it then I say go ahead as it can only help

E6600 can normally do about 3.4-3.6, more on water.

Thanks for the quick reply! It's very likely that I'll go for 8 gigs as it will make a big difference for me in my audio work.

Is there any other RAM that you would suggest that would be better suited? I have easy access to G.Skill, OCZ, Geil, Corsair, Team and Patriot.

I'll be sure to post the results once I get serious with the water. I may even pull out my old butchered neverfail home-made water chiller for sub-ambient temps. :-)

G.Skill, Mushkin, or Crucial is what I always use/suggest but plenty of others are great as well. Just keep in mind with 8GB you wont be doing 1000+ likely, so no need to spend extra to get that speed of memory 800Mhz memory will do just fine and you will be able to run it at 800-900 without issues most often

Yep, I understand what you are saying about the RAM speeds when using 8Gb. But the G.Skill 1100MHz is only $1 more than the G.Skill 800MHz so I'll most likely just get that, unless its out of stock or somthing.

Thanks for your help and for the prompt replies. I'll be sure to post some details when I get everything running smooth.

Ahh, well in that case I would go ahead and get the 1100Mhz then!

Good luck with the setup, and please do let us know how you get along!
