Re: Can I use eSATA drives with my motherboard?

That's the best way to go. You can go without an enclosure, as gampamu said, but I wouldn't want to continually handle a bare HDD. The controller board on the bottom of the unit is still static sensitive.

Re: Can I use eSATA drives with my motherboard?

Is the new HDD going to be connected to the computer all the time, or plugged in only when performing the back-ups and put away until needed?

If the HDD is going to be connected to the computer all the time, it would make the best sense to simply install the HDD internally.

If the HDD is going to be used for back-ups and put away until needed, you can either connect the HDD directly using the cables that came with the eSATA bracket or you can put the disk in an eSATA enclosure as others have suggested if you don't feel comfortable handling the bare HDD. But I would personally install the HDD internally in this situation as well and "put sway" the HDD simply by unplugging the power connector (the larger of the two connectors associated with SATA drives).
