  • Help with overclocking i7 / x58 UD5

I am trying to get my rig to 4ghz and think everything in the bios is set ok, apart from the voltages.

It will boot into Windows 7 64bit, but reboots within seconds when testing with prime95.

I have lowered the BCLK to 190 and run prime for an hour without any problems, so suspect that my volts need tweaking?

    Many thanks

        Re: Help with overclocking i7 / x58 UD5

        Still having a few problems.

Changed things slightly and can boot into W7 fine.
Runs Prime95 for around 10 minutes with no errors then sudden grey/blue blank screen and have to reboot.

Adjusted bios as follows to get this far:

          Re: Help with overclocking i7 / x58 UD5

upped the following volts and managed to go 15mins with prime till system crash:

          CPU PLL 1.88
          QPI PLL 1.24
          IOH CORE 1.28
          ICH CORE 1.24

What are the safe voltage paramaters that I should stay within, on the settings that I need to adjust/tweak?

            Re: Help with overclocking i7 / x58 UD5

At the risk of being burned at the stake for heresy Prime95 for 15 minutes is not bad IF you are not going to utilise your PC's maximum capacity for long periods of time. I have an i5 system/win7 32-bit that has never succeeded in running Prime95 for more than 30mins before crashing, it never fails on memtest or SuperPi 32M.

I regularly use it for video rendering playing COD and warcraft for hours on end and it has never once crashed while performing these functions

              Thanks for that.

Made a couple more adjustments and have managed to run prime95 for 45 minutes with no errors.

CPU temp went to 74 max. I am happy with just over 4ghz without too much hassle.

                Re: Help with overclocking i7 / x58 UD5

Will I see much of a performance increase if I push things further and go for a 200 bclk, meaning my ram will run at 1600mhz instead of 1528mhz as it is running at now?

Is it worth the effort and extra volts/heat?

                  Hi,

If your system configuration as stated above is pretty stable at 3.8GHz then you could try simply turning on Turbo mode in the Performance Enhance as I understand it this give you an effective CPU multiplier of 21 hence your effective OC becomes 21x191 = 4.01 GHz

This Gigabyte guide has been quoted elsewhere but I have found it useful

Does he not indicate in Post #7 that he already has Turbo mode enabled?

Yes turbo is already enabled so I am already over 4ghz.

I am having to add more volts to gain a higher bclk.

I am trying to get 200 bclk stable atm. I have raised the vcore to 1.3250v and prime95 failed after around 20 mins.

Will try raising the QPI/VTT slightly to 1.375v to see if that helps.

Turned off turbo to try and get 200 bclk stable to run the ram at 1600mhz.

Proving more difficult as having to add more vcore and QPI/VTT. Failing prime95 after around 20 minutes atm.

Will keep trying bit by bit

Dunno but on his config as posted 2:10pm yesterday it doesnt appear to be? If it is then his multiplier is x21 which means he has achieved his 4GHz target anyway with a 191 BCLK :P

Turbo was off in the first config, then I turned it on.

I have it off atm as was not having much success getting 200bclk stable.

Have managed to get it stable for over 1 hour with prime, with turbo off. Temps are a little high so working on lowering that next.

Are there any gains for running with turbo enabled (apart from a higher CPU clock that is) ?
