  • New system build not powering up

    Hi all,

Am new to building systems and just had to replace my 6yr old pc... inevitably have run into a serious problem.

After all components have been assembled, I simply cannot get it to POST.

    i7-920 D0 @ 2.66 GHz QPI 4.8 GT/s 8MB Cache (using boxed heat sink)
    Gigabyte EX58-UD3R rev 1.6 motherboard
    Corsair Dominator 6GB 3x 2GB DDR3 (TR3x6G1600C8D)
1TB WD 7200rpm 32MB SATA HD caviar green
    inno3D GeForce GT 240 1Gb
Samsung superwritemaster SATA 22x DVD writer
    CoolerMaster silent pro 700W M
    CoolerMaster Cosmos 1000 case

When I turn on the power switch, the fans spin and just 1 phase LED labelled DD1 flashes along with the case's power LED but then it immediately powers off.

Having read through the forum, I have tried the following:
    -reset CMOS
-tried booting with just 1 RAM module
    -crosschecked all connectors
-tried using a different PCI-E slot
-tried using a differnt RAM slot( certainly not the blue one!)
-crosschecked the polarity of the F-Panel jumper settings

but to no avail, could someone brighten my venture ?

    Thanks indeed in anticipation

Re: New system build not powering up

Thank you for the very prompt reply. Unfortunately the old PC's PSU is just rated at 300W and am not too sure if this will support it and thus I have not yet tried.

      Also, when you say

"what error code is it giving you on the motherboard l.e.d clock?? "

I confess that I do not know where this motherboad LED clock is. The supplied manual and the downloaded version do not mention this, could you please guide me through this. Nothing is displayed on the monitor when I switch on so I cant read any error messages(if this is what you were referring to)

      Thanks again.

Re: New system build not powering up

the clocks at the very bottom two digit red clock display right hand side,it will work with 300w psu,i ran mine while i waited for new psu, just plug the 4pin cpu power plug in(it will only plug in one way leaving four empty sockets) and try it its 100% safe as ive done this myself

Re: New system build not powering up

Ok have set up the old 300W PSU but now I have a question, should I just plug in the 4-pin cpu power plug and not the ATX as well? Sorry if this is not the technical term but according to the manual/schematic it is just referred to as:

          1. ATX_12V_2x (4 pin cpu power plug)
          2. ATX (just plainATX)

yes plug them both in,the only thing that will be different from other psu is the 4pin and 8pin cpu power,it will run on a 4pin plug and it will only plug in one way, plug all the other connectors in aswell including motherboard 24pin plug

Oh dear this old psu has only a 20 pin motherboard plug, I hope that this is still sufficient enough

Re: New system build not powering up

Very bad news, as soon as I switched on, two fans (bottom and back of the case) started spinning but the psu sparked and is certainly fried(smoke and acrid smell)no LEDs lit up....

I am hoping that this is just the PSU.

it will only plug in one way,i just read the manual it says its ok aslong as you dont plug the 20pin into the 24pins slots ie leave four empty slots at the bottom, the only way to know is to try with original psu and see if mb lights up,

Re: New system build not powering up

Phew :-) yes I did plug it in exactly as the manual stated. The old PSU is certainly dead( still smelling acrid...) but the great news is that at least am back to my initial state of the build.

The only thing I have realised is that this might be the wrong RAM type since these RAM modules are not listed on the Gigabyte website as being supported by this motherboard. WOuld this ead me to this state?

it could be,but it could also be psu it will give the same symptoms,i just double checked the manual, and it says it supports 2x10pin atx psu's so what you did was right, but did you leave 4 empty sockets at the top or bottom on mb plug??? maybe you plugged it in wrong....im glad you didnt blow anything else i feel guilty but you were quite safe to use a 20pin plug

Only the top four sockets were empty, but clearly the psu was just not up to the job.
All the components I have were delivered new yesterday could it be that the psu was shipped when faulty/got damaged during shipping? I could try to borow one from colleagues but this might take a bit of time since it is over the weekend...

will they let you return/exchange your ram for a different brand? you could buy a cheap brand 300w psu but with a 24pin motherboard plug that would work because mine had a 24pin mb plug but only a 4 pin cpu plug but it powered up and ran for weeks

Hopefully they will this being less than 14 days.... We seem to be focusing on the PSU, is this the biggest point of failure (at least as of my set up)? Could it also be down to the motherboard or does the fact that the fans spin (even the one on the graphics card....) mean that the motherboard is ok?
