Boot priority for USB stick lost when stick is removed

I've read several threads about this behaviour.

I'm not here to argue about the "bug or feature" question.

Is it a workaround to boot from USB without entering the BIOS ?

I need it because the system will have no screen/keyboard when put in production.

You can try holding down F12 for boot menu option doring boot but I havent been able to boot from my usb stick doing so. I always have to enter bios to boot from my usb stick.

F12 works for me.

But my problem is that I'd like to boot from USB if stick is plugged and from disk if no stick is plugged without user interaction, because there will be no keyboard attached in the final setup.

I see what your saying.. I have needed that option also my self.. I dont know if that can be done. Which option do you choose when holding F12?

why don't you install that usb stick inside the case

i mean, to use one of the onboard usb ports using an USB extension but cutting it to the half and soldered or joined to some usb brackets

then the usb stick can be living inside your case, and it will force to boot from usb and avoiding to be removed.

Which option do you choose when holding F12?

I choose +Hard disk, then the USB stick which is listed with the installed hard disk(s).

That's not what I want. I want to boot from disk if no USB stick is plugged, and from USB if the stick is present.

Usage scenario :

• the system is in a server room, with no keyboard and no monitor
• it boots from disk and run until I need to access it in 'maintenance mode'
• I go to the server room and I plug the stick and go back to my desk
• from my ssh session, I reboot the system
• I log on the USB booted system and perform my administration tasks
• when I'm finished, I go to the server room and remove the stick
• from my desk, I reboot the system from disk

So the server has no remote management module? And any KVM (over IP) would be over the budget too?

I have never tested this, but:
- Add into Grub conf on HDD a stanza for chainloading from the USB
- Set it the default
- stick in the USB
- reboot
- manage
- revert default on grub.conf
- reboot
- remove the stick

Even though the BIOS would not keep the USB on the boot priority, the bootloader on the HDD can boot a system that is on the USB.
