    GA-EP45-UD3P (1.6) - SATA Ports

    Hi,

    I was wondering what are the differences in the SATA ports on this board? There are (2) purple ones GSATA2 (assuming controlled by Gigabyte Controller) and (6) yellow/orange ones (assuming using an Intel controller).

    The reason I ask is I just got a new Vertex Turbo SSD drive and have it connected to GSATA2_0 (purple) and have my optical drive on SATA2_0 (yellow)...is this correct? I mean the machine boots, etc but it shows it as Master on Channel 5 or something. The OCZ documentation says to install it on the lowest numbered port. Also OCZ recommends AHCI mode which I've enabled in the BIOS (entry at top) BUT there's another selection for AHCI/RAID about halfway down in that same list. But if i change that one I have issues with the drive not being seen so it's set at IDE.

    At this point I only have the OS on the drive and would like to pull it and start over if I've done something that's prohibiting the maximum performance.

    Do I have it backwards? Should my boot/HDD be in SATA2_0 (orange) and my optical drive be in GSATA2_0?

    Thanks in advance for any help/advice...this is my first build and so far hasn't been very much fun

    The yellow Sata2_0 should be used for your SSD boot drive.
    The purple GSata ports have lower performance than the yellow (Intel) sata ports.

    Several threads deal with setting up AHCI after your operating system is already installed.
    Use the forum's advanced SEARCH feature using:
    ahci+post+install
    and you should find links that describe this procedure.

      Made sure both sets of ports were in AHCI mode in the BIOS, switched the SSD over to Port0 on the orange SATA ports, put my optical drive on Port5 then ran wiper.exe on the SSD.
      Ran AS SSD this morning and got over 2x the performance!
      Everything seems golden with regard to this issue, now just need to score a decent liquid cooling system to start really pushing this thing.
