  • GA-EP43-DS3L + Crucial Ballistix BL2KIT25664AA80A (2 x 2GB DDR2 800 Mhz kit ) = Fail?

Hello first of all I am an foreigner and so please do not mind possible spelling mistakes.

    Here is my system:

    PSU: TAGAN TG480-U15 480 Watt (I also used an Enermax MODU82+ 625W EMD625AWT)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7300
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L (Bios version F9e)
    RAM: Crucial Ballistix BL2KIT25664AA80A 2x2GB DDR2 800 kit
GPU: Sappire Radeon HD4850 512 MB dual slot fan

My problem is that my system gets unstable after 24 hours of continuous usage. If i stress it with prime95 (blend torture test) in parallel with Furmark 1.7 i usually get a BSOD after 8 to 12 hours saying "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT". If i do a hard reset and run immediately memtest86+ i get too many errors (as if the BIOS has lost its settings). When the system powers down (using power button or after changing an crucial setting in bios) there are no errors in memtest at the next power up. And after 8-12 hours the same is happening...

These are some BIOS settings i have used (even went down to 667 MHz but no result)

    DDR: 2.0 V

    +5V: 5.11 V
    +12V: 12.22 V

Is this motherboard incompatible with the Ballistix? Or the ballistix have failed? I did give them for testing to the local store from which i had bought them but they said that they are O.K. and maybe is some other part which causes the problem but i don not trust them. I highly doubt that they test them for 24 hours

I just put on 2x1GB ADATA AD2800001GMU DDR 667 (overclocked to 800MHZ 5-5-5-15 1.8V) with no stability problems up to now (but I have not yet stressed the system for 24 hours). I have used them back when the ballistix where at the store for testing with no problems either.

It should be compatible, I personally reviewed these kits on P45 and I think P43 should be the same. My review has several sets of timings, if you want to read that later the link is in my signature.

I will help you now with your current settings though too.

WOW, there is really no need to test using prime95 and furmark at the same time. You should do this sperately, I could see this causing errors anytime because the system would be fighting over CPU and memory cycles, when there would be none to go around.

Sometimes it is easier to get stable if you overclock the CPU, I know that might sound crazy but I am serious.

Anyway, try these settings and see if it helps you for now

      Re: GA-EP43-DS3L + Crucial Ballistix BL2KIT25664AA80A (2 x 2GB DDR2 800 Mhz kit ) = F

Thanks for the reply. I am currently testing the 2x1GB adata configuration just to make sure that my motherboard is not defective. These are my current settings and voltages:

      Memset:

      SPD timings:

      Voltages and temperatures:

And here the current results of furmark

      and prime95

      So far it is stable.

Theoretically the computer should not get unstable because of the stressing. It might become irresponsible but it should not produce BSODs and prime95 errors. (Or so they taught us in the operating systems and computer architecture lessons of our school) I run the tests on parallel because they reproduce the instability faster. Also furmark puts some stress to the pci-x bus.

I shall put on the Ballistix again after finishing the test and test your settings. Cross fingers it ll be stable after 24 hours (12 hour to go), for now...

      PS.
      • Is it ok to put the Ballistix to 2.1 volts? They are the 2.0V version. Will this void my warranty?
      • My MCH has only 1.0-1.1-1.2-1.3-1.4 volts as choices. Should i try 1.3? Will this not overheat my Northbridge?
      • Setting ram to 2.0v give me 2.01v or so in the PC Health. Only my +3.3v rail drops down to 3.28 after increasing the MCH voltage.

So the system is rock stable using the Adata pair for 28 hours of stressing with both prime95 and furmark. So the motherboard is not defective to begin with.

I m putting on the Ballistix...

Let us know how you get along.

Keep in mind for 4x1GB or 2x2GB you will need to make several of your own manual changes, auto usually is not going to work very well.

If you still have issues post me your current full settings and I will advise back on things to try next

Well now i am using the following settings (as they read using everest)

            I am using 3.2B multiplier

and for your reference here is the complete spd settings of the ballistix

Using CAS 4 failed. I got a BSOD immediately!
About votages am still using MCH core voltage 1.2 volt and DIMM voltage 2.0v. These are the voltages as read from everest

The system is currently under stressing. So these are voltages and temperatures on full load.

            Hope i hear you soon!

You may have better luck using CAS 4 if you up your FSB to 333 and use the 2.40B memory multi with tRD 7-8.

And you may need to use MCH 1.3 since you do not have intervals between 1.2-1.3 on this board.

3.20B on 266 FSB may also be what caused CAS 4 to fail for you, not sure? Did you try 3.00A which would be the correct strap/multi for your FSB

Will try that next if stressing now fails.

                And this also.

well using 3.00A has failed numerous times before, but i think i had never relaxed tRD to 7. Will try that also.

Btw on my current settings (FSB 266, multi 3.2B, CAS 5) Driving Strength 800 gives me triple boot. I am using 1066.

                Thanks for the reply.

I ll try to set the values reported from auto manually and (I'll set channel's B tRD to 6) inform you how it is going...

                    Till next time!

Great to hear! I knew you could get it going!

Thanks for posting your settings, they might help others in the future!

I am glad you noticed the tRD differences, be sure you set those to the same values. If 6 fails for both, set 7 of course, and using 7 may also allow you to use less MCH or Vdimm too because it would be less stressful than 6

Hooray! System is stable for more than 40 hours running prime95. I also played Crysis (with prime 95 running) and no issues either. Bumping FSB to 333 MHz and lowering CPU multiplier to 8 did the trick. These are my final settings

                            Hello again!

Well i didnt like the fact that i was constantly overclocking my main system (and didn't take advantages of the full potential of the motherboard's energy saving features) and so i did some further research on this matter. I suspected that BIOS when FSB is set to 333 MHz uses some settings which are different from when FSB is set to 266 MHz. So i set them manually to their FSB 333 auto values and voila, problems gone and system is up and running normally after 30 hours of stressing using prime 95.

                            These are my improved settings:

                            Code:

Those phase adjusts should be fine set to auto, and would be optimal that way as well.

Are you saying if they are set to auto it causes problems?
