  • P55A-UD4 Freezes, Crashes, Reboots

Hi Guys, have had a good read through this forums over the last week have seen similar issues etc and have decided to open my own thread to get a fresh perspective.

My issues are random freezes either when idle / web browsing / videos / itunes.
Sometimes it will be a straight freeze where keyboard / mouse stop responding and everything on screen stops, if a video / podcast / game was in use the sound will be looped. Requires hard reset.

These freezes will sometimes happen upon boot up, after five minutes, after 30 minutes, or six hours.

Lately have also experienced a few blue screens - will watch out for one and grab the error codes.

Have gone through using 1 stick of RAM in each slot and alternating - have experienced the same issues.

Have run memtest86 with no errors found for 5 passes with both sticks.
Have run again with a single stick alternating between slots 1 and 3 for 5 passes with no errors, and then repeated with the second stick.

The Graphics card has been replaced previously.

Have also disconnected my storage drives using only the OS drive and have still experienced freezes.

Tonight I will run the memory in a second box I have to see if it can run over night without any issue.

So far I am expecting issue with the memory or the motherboard. Is it common to have both sticks faulty? Any thoughts, advice or observations much appreciated.

Firstly flash to F11(F10 a bit buggy with USB keyboard),apply "Optimized Defaults" and check.

Did you try run memory at spec. speed 9-9-9-28,1.65V,DDR3-2000 or XMP ?
Try to reset CPU,check pins, maybe drivers......

you can disable xmp and set the ram timing yourself,to raise ram speed adjust the spd ram multiplier to give you 1600mhz speed, set dram voltage to 1.5v and qpi/vtt needs to be raised to 1.2v as 1.1v isnt enough

              Re: P55A-UD4 Freezes, Crashes, Reboots

Have run the RAM at 9 9 9 9 28 at 1600 by changing the profile (can't remember the exact setting name in the bios).

Reset the CPU and reapplied thermal paste last night. CPU pins were all good.

Have my second box (this one) running the two sticks at the moment has stayed up over night no issues.

Will try out your suggested settings tonight.

It is a shame I don't have another set of DDR3 to try out in my main rig.

                Having any luck yet?

If not disable XMP and set everything yourself, then give us your settings you are trying to use.

                  Re: P55A-UD4 Freezes, Crashes, Reboots

Hey guys, I have had my 2nd machine running with the RAM from my problomatic RIG successfully for 2 nights straight now so I'm starting to rule out the RAM being the issue here.

I will swap the RAM back to the problomatic rig tonight and try the manual settings by disabling XMP.

One question I do have is around the fail safe default and the optimized default, when switching between the two I can't seem to figure out what the difference is. Both seem to set the CPU above the rated 2.6 GHz.

I'll report back tonight when I swap the RAM back in.

PS. My 2nd machine has an ASUS P5KC mobo in it which has two DDR3 slots in it where I can test out my main rigs RAM, unfortunately it runs DDR2 itself so cannot test these sticks in the P55A-UD4.

                    Re: P55A-UD4 Freezes, Crashes, Reboots

its rated at 2.66 but with intel turbo boost enabled it will add extra to the cpu multplier giving you a higher clockspeed, for the 920 its an extra 1x cpu multi, but it varies for i3/i5/i7, its normal,if you want the 2.66mhz cpu speed then just disable intel turbo boost but it should run fine with it enabled

Sounds very much like my problem http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/p55-...problem-36851/, just mine is the UD4. Still no luck with that btw. I 'll keep an eye on this thread to see if something comes up.

                        Re: P55A-UD4 Freezes, Crashes, Reboots

                        Thanks for clarifying that Wazza.

LSDmeup, have just pulled the RAM back from the 2nd machine that has been running non stop with no issues for 72ish hours. So back in the main rig and had multiple freezes upon the windows login screen.

When you say disable the XMP - what part of the BIOS is this? And does this include following the steps that Wazza has suggested further up?

"adjust the spd ram multiplier to give you 1600mhz speed, set dram voltage to 1.5v and qpi/vtt needs to be raised to 1.2v as 1.1v isnt enough"

If you could break it down a tad so I can follow along without making an error that would be much appreciated.

Gregmits, have you been through the ordeal of adjusting the memory settings? Tried anything else? I'm kind of suspecting it may not be my memory due to be able to run my second machine issue free with the same sticks.

^^^yellow marker set to disabled, black marker set to manual and there will be a list of numbers, raise it untill it gives you your ram speed 1333/1600mhz ect,red marker set to enabled, green marker go in channel A and B then you can enter the ram timings marked out below, type the timings in on the side of your module

^^^ with spd timings enabled you will be able to enter channel A and B and enter the timings in the yellow marker box

                          ^^^yellow marker set to 1.2000v
red marker set according to your ram either 1.5v or 1.66v

Will give these a go. Have returned home and the PC has not frozen since i've been gone.

                            Very intermittent issues this one.
