    Re: New Goal: 4.2ghz q9550 + ep45-ud3p + 8gb g.skill pi black pc2-6400

My case has two 140mm fans on the top and the psu is mounted on the bottom.
It looks like I'll have to make a full sized cardboard model of the Mugen and see if it will work with the exhaust from the Mugen blowing out the top of the case..
I might be able to make it work with 2 fans in a weird push/pull setup where the pushing fan would mount on the narrow side of the cooler closest to the video card and the pull fan would be close to the standard case exhaust fan on the back of the case. The existing top exhaust fan would be close the topmost side of the Mugen, but this case fan would still be attached to the top of the case.
    Whew!!!

Thanks again for your feedback Chike.

The Mugen 2 looks ultra cramped in Chike's case, meanwhile, it seemed like the cpu temp didn't drop at all. Chike, any updates on that?

Though, the UD3P + Antec Soho SX1040B should be fairly roomy.

No updates. It's difficult to say as I OCed higher since.
I broke a part in the Zalman CNPS8700 so I improvized something that I think locked it tighter, so it may have cooled better than the avarage CNPS8700.
I am soon going to upgrade my machine so I'll check if the thermal paste was applied properly.

Look at the noctura nt-c12P if your case can't handle heights. I had my q8200 OC'd to 3.36 stable on an AC freezer Pro but over 8 months it post stability now my chip is shot. Time for a Q9550.

coolermaster v8 gets 45nm quad 775s to 500ref/2000 fsb stable.
Its rated 180w (obviously thats thermal rating not power consumption)

The V8 is a beast of a cooler 161mm. I couldn't fit it in my rig (HTPC Thermaltake DH101), but the Noctura is amazing and allowed me to take an additional fan off the NB. Check out the tweak town write-up here. Noctua NH-C12P SE14 CPU Cooler Introduction :: TweakTown USA Edition

                  4ghz (500x8)
Im down to 3.92 atm because Im worried about total pwer consumption/heat with a new o/c gx card.
Its more expensive now than when i bought it at the end of 2008,even then it did come with a 1336 adapter plate in addition to the 775 and amd ones.
It and the newer V10 are "poser" coolers ,but the important thing is it works well.

On the height of it. I got around that on a 18cm width case originally by using a smoked ,raised perspex panel. Now I use the original side panel with most of the metal cut away and a black material something similar to what you would see covering loudspeakers.
This provides clearance for the cooler and also acts like a giant air filter.
I just vacuum it every month or so.
                  I like my case :)
I may change it and get a full width one+ extra psu in preparation for going to i cpu and sli gx.

edit: actually sorry i dont scan the forums like i used to
My memory(same type as yours) wont go above say 450 with 4-4-4-12 and pl7 without 2.2v,for 460 and those timings it needs 2.3 v. for 450-500 fsb at cas 5-5-5-15 it starts off at around 2.0 hits 2.1 at 490 fsb and needs 2.22 for 500fsb and thats only 4gb
                  might be usefull

yeah old components' prices seem to rebound for those late comers. esp. ram can be ridiculous after a few years. it's smarter to just certain extra parts like ram while they are still cheap.

have you used the psu power consumption calculator? Antec Power Supply Calculator hopefully its up to date.

im still working on my case... unfortunately i can't get my window any wider because i got a latch right there. and the heatsink is right under it. oh well. i like your stereo screen idea! i have always been wondering how to make an efficient filter that would be easy to clean. i remember back in the day, diy pc shops would sell these fan-screen filters which you could remove and clean anytime... it just looked like a pain since it would probably get stuffed within a week. the better ones were those wrinkly wavy metal ones that allowed more surface area of intake so that it would take longer to get stuffed. or the best i have seen was a custom installed car cold-air intake filter and duct on top of the case.

thinking about it, there's no point in upgrading my heatsink cuz i'd have to spend way more time and money than noticing the benefits of the mhz gained. i'll have to wait till my next build to slap on a better one.

His Threads = 4 setting is lowering his GFlops score somewhat. With quad cores, Threads = Auto should provide a bit higher score.
With dual core processors, I've found that Threads = 2 provides a significantly higher score (and lower times) compared to Threads = Auto.

His memory running 100MHz less with the same timings, might be just that, increasing PLL may also help, and temps are higher.
The difference may be even bigger if you ran with 3GB memory too.

Slowing memory down to 990 MHz seems to cut 1 Gflop, PLL voltage and temps don't have any effect on my system, I had same Gflops running on air and temps close to 80 C.
