  • New stuff GA-X58-UD3R i7 930

I decided to upgrade my computer now, its pretty dangerous to have one of Sweden's biggest hardware/game retailers just across the street from my work :P

I picked up a i7 930, UD3R and a 80gb Intel SSD and will use my components for now which is:

    GA-X48T-DQ6 rev 1.3 BIOS F6E
    Intel C2D E8400 C0 @ 440x9 (3960Mhz)

Corsair H50 Cpu cooler powered by a Noctua Fan
    Corsair XMS3 DHX 9-9-9-24
    Gainward HD 4870
    Zalman HP650
    Fractal Design Define R2

I was thinking that I might need to exchange RAM and PSU as well. Not sure which RAM I should use, any pointers?
PSU will probably be a Corsair 750HX.
    GA-X58A-UD3R (2.0)
    Intel i7 930 (stock atm)
    Intel X25-M G2 80GB
Corsair H50 Cpu cooler powered by a Noctua Fan
    *Corsair XMS3 DHX 9-9-9-24
    ASUS ENGTX480/2DI/1536MD5
    Corsair 750 HX
    Fractal Design Define R2 case
    2x 750GB Samsung F1 Spinpoint in raid 0

    HTPC (WIP):
    GA-X48T-DQ6 rev 1.3 BIOS F6E
    Intel C2D E8400 (stock atm)
    Velociraptor 160GB
    Gainward HD 4870
    Zalman HP600

    Re: New stuff GA-X58-UD3R i7 930

I'd suggest a different PSU, larger if you can afford it. Those Z's have had a few known issues with X58, I'm not sure if it was that model in particular or not though.

You could always try it out though before getting something new.

As for memory, I would advise you get a triple channel kit rated at 1.65V

Yeah, I know about the Zalman issue we discussed it a few months ago :) How about the corsair 750hx, shouldn't that work fine? I wont run SLI or a silly amount of HDD, probably just 2 hdd in raid 0 and the SSD.

I was thinking about this memory:

      And this PSU:

Not sure, do a search here with X58* and 750HX and see if people have had issues, I can't recall that one being a problem though but I could be wrong.

        Memory should be fine

Hmm, major problem. I tried to install win 7 but the first cd I tried was broken so some files were missing. Then I tried another copy which worked before but it just reboots as soon as the windows loading starts.

i think your fine with a hx,diid you disable floppy drives from the bios? and drive A? makesure sata is set to ide mode,if you want to use ahci then you need drivers before os install, and try disabling intel turbo boost and install

              trying that now.
The second win 7 disc installs everything but when it tries to start windows for the first time it reboots in an endless loop. Could it be something with SSD drive?
I have my old velociraptor disc that I used up until today I could try installing on that one to see if that solves the problem.

what do you want to use? ide mode or ahci for ssd? i would use ahci, just set the two controllers in the bios to ahci then install win7 it will auto install drivers for them, put ssd in port 0 and storage hdd in port 1,any sata dvd drives in port 4 or 5

you can put raid in ports 1 and 2, and ssd in port 0
you want it to scan for your ssd first then the raid setup and any dvd drives later in 4 and 5

hmm, still not working, I did as you said above and also downloaded the ichr driver and put them on a disc and used the "have drivers button". That found the drivers but it couldn't install them. Should I try to upgrade bios? using a ud3r rev 2.0 board.

Trying the old disc now to see what happened.

Your QPI/VTT might be low that is might be the reason for the reboots, try to set it to 1.3v to start with until you install windows, then you can fine tune finding the sweet spot.

About the RAM, take a look at these sticks, they do run very well on my system:
CMX6GX3M3A2000C9 ( you will not find them on Corsair homepage).

                            They can do 1600MHz at 8-8-8-20-1T at 1.54v and 2000MHz at 9-9-9-24-1T at 1.58v.

I will try that and updating BIOS since it never hurts to have the latest version.

I was looking at those sticks as well, thanks for the recommendation :)
