• Gigabyte gtx465 driver & Just Cause 2

Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone else has run across this problem? Got around to playing this game again with new X58 mobo\i7 950 (previously X48 DS4 mobo/E8400) and found that when action happens (in game) that it freezes for up to a minute but sometimes less and then returns to full functionality only to repeat! Did note that the sound looped while the game is frozen. This happened continuously making the game almost unplayable. This problem didnt show with other games such as STALKER, FEAR2, FARCRY2 and CIV 5 so why?
I tried adjusting GPU and sound settings but nothing changed until I rewound the GPU driver back to ver 157.... from ver 175.... (these are approx "ver" details) and found the game ran perfectly!!
So why?
Just an interested question?
Regards to Wazza & LSD cos I luv your previous help.
Leroy
ps if you remember my other posts I got my rev 2 UD3R back and havent had a problem since except for this.

Re: Gigabyte gtx465 driver & Just Cause 2

Not sure if this matters but what is the difference between X58A UD3R & X58 UD3R Mobo's? It appears to me that "rev" number is a factor ie 1.0, 1.6, 1.7, 2.0, etc?
Mine is Rev 2.0 and so what does that mean apart from (USB) charge on\off?

Re: Gigabyte gtx465 driver & Just Cause 2

i think its just changes to the power phases, the difference in revisions on the mb

if its just freezing in that game and on that driver version an no other driver version then its probably a driver or game bug,i wouldnt worry about it too much if it works fine on an older driver, hopefully the next release will fix the freezing

Ta Wazza,
But can you define power phases? I do know 2 phase, 3 phase and polyphase but is there a 1 phase or is that an incomplete circuit? Just kidding! But what were you referring to with the Mobo? Would also point out the huge numerical difference in driver revisions for the GPU that I did state.

the power phases that speed up and throttle the cpu voltage and speed,i think the newer revisions have more phases

you could try one or two clicks up on ioh and ich cores for your gpu, wish i was in adelaide to see the pommies win(again),its snowing here in blighty

The new versions actually have LESS phases, and they are designed differently than the older versions.

Here is how the new design works

Sounds like Nvidia needs to get on the ball with drivers for this game, or you could stick with the old ones for a while

Hi all,
Just thought I would tell you that I have finally solved this problem!! Certainly not the first thing I would have thought of but all I did was set the affinity for the game to CPU 0-3 rather than CPU 0-7! Maybe the the game is not properly compatible with the i7 CPU? Maybe someone has a reason why?

Nice find!

Ya, it could just be the game isn't setup right for i7? I'd check for updates for the game, and or maybe contact them directly to see if this is a known issue.

Re: Gigabyte gtx465 driver & Just Cause 2

Guess the game is optimised for up to 4 threads and gets confused if there are more? i7 has 8! In the past this game ran beautifully using e8400 (2 threads) + X48 + 2G RAM. I had tried all sorts of changes to game setup without success. Probably is a fix out there but this solution is easy so wont bother looking!! Might even be particular to my system.
I also think this might be an answer to some other people's problems. Maybe some more research?
Regards
ps The game has now run faultlessly for many hours!

Perhaps filing a bug report with the game developer/publisher will also be helpful. You could link this thread and the steps you used to rectify the issue.

It's worth sending it to nVidia too as if the game worked OK with previous driver versions, something has been broken since. Maybe a driver threading issue? Hopefully either nV will then patch their drivers (most likely) or Eidos (now Square Enix) will be able to patch the game, assuming enough people have the same issue.

Hmm @Psycho101. Will think about it. Eidos doesnt have a good record for fixes from what I have seen of the forums. I am thinking I might post to one of their forums to see if others have had this problem. Just googled to find i5 thread number (4) so this might be an issue for the higher end processors with more than 4 threads! Obviously that limits the number of people who might have this problem. Just Cause 2 has not missed a beat since changing the affinity!
Could be that this problem will show up more in the future and probably for a whole lot of other "older" games as people upgrade computers.
