  • X58A-UD3R F1 12GB of ram problems

I'm fairly new to OC'ing... but pretty much everything I have learned has been from this site, although I just now finally registered. I have searched and tried almost everything I can find trying to get my system stable with 12gb of ram with no luck. 6gb stable with no issues, soon as I go to 12gb memtest finds errors. Hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction.
    Thank you in advance!

    Re: X58A-UD3R F1 12GB of ram problems

Ive tested a ton of variations of DRAM voltage and QPI/VTT Voltage all the way up to:
    DRAM - 1.680v and
    QPI/VTT - 1.595v

Still getting a memtest errors, one time I made it 2 hours before it found an error.. I'm afraid to go much higher... any suggestions?

      Re: X58A-UD3R F1 12GB of ram problems

You can tell by the cpu and PCI-E clock drives that you did not load optimized defaults. You need to go back to the main menu in BIOS and select Load Optimized Defaults. Be careful. Doing so will reset everything and you will have to reconfigure everything, including Integrated Peripherals and Advanced BIOS Settings. Check the latter to reconfigure boot priority and the former to choose between IDE, AHCI, and RAID.

Afterward, cpu clock drive will show 900mV, I think, and PCIE, 800mV.

Also, Uncore frequency should be 2x, 2x+1, or 2x+2 of memory multiplier. So, with your memory multiplier at 8, you can try Uncore multiplier at 16, 17, or 18.

Anyway, can you tell us what you did to make sure that all 6 sticks are fine? If you have not tested all 6, then what I would do is test 3 sticks in the white slots with Memtest. If they pass, then swap out the sticks for the other three. If any of the set of 3 fail, then you could test the sticks in the set 1 at a time to see which is bad.

If all six pass, then I would proceed by raising cpu VCore. Try testing it at 1.3V.

        Re: X58A-UD3R F1 12GB of ram problems

^Nope, I got it wrong: cpu clock drive should =800mV and PCI-E clock drive should =900mV.

The reason why I mention uncore is because when I had a stick that was going bad(?), I could only run at Uncore multi=16 for a while.

          Re: X58A-UD3R F1 12GB of ram problems

I ran each set of ram with memtest for 4 hours each with no errors at all.

          I loaded optimized defaults.
set cpu-vcore as you requested... memtest still finds errors.

At what point do I start to look at my board for a bad slot?

            Re: X58A-UD3R F1 12GB of ram problems

If your seeing full 12gb in the bios you don't have a bad slot, when do you get errors?from cold? Try setting qpi link speed to 44x too and around 1.38-1.4v qpi/vtt voltage

You could try testing 3 sticks a time in the white slots only, test with memtest to see if you have any faulty sticks,if you do get errors with one batch of 6gb then try narrowing it down by testing one stick at a time on first white slot from cpu socket

Some other things to try are testing 12gb at lower freq,or looser timings 9 9 9 24? Keep qpi voltage at 1.4v if no errors up the ram speed and qpi voltage, adding a few clicks of qpi/pll voltage can help lower qpi/vtt voltage too

              Re: X58A-UD3R F1 12GB of ram problems

bios is showing 12gb. Its not a cold boot issue... cold or warm its the same.

I tested my ram exactly the way you described. Had 0 errors in 4 hours of testing on each set with memtest.

I will try the suggested settings right now.

also tried setting my cpu vcore to 1.3 as suggested above and my pc wouldn't boot.

tried setting QPI link speed to x44, hung on a black screen and wouldn't boot. Had to set it back to auto.

                Re: X58A-UD3R F1 12GB of ram problems

You just could have a poorly matched set,you should run 12gb at 1600mhz with less than 1.5v qpi/vtt imo, could have a hungry cpu imc(integrated memory controller) too,so you might need to compromise between qpi voltage and memory speed/timings

it has to be voltages cause your only getting errors with full 12gb

You could try 1t,have you set qpi/vtt voltage to auto just to see what it sets it to with 12gb @1600mhz?

Yes when I first loaded optimized defaults this morning, and it auto set it to 2... so I left it.

I'm running a memtest now with my QPI/VTT set at 1.38 and DRAM @ 1.64, 22 minutes in and no errors yet.

                        Re: X58A-UD3R F1 12GB of ram problems

For 6 sticks, 2t is likely better.

If you are stuck, then what I would do is start over. In fact, that's what I just did to my buggy system.

Put Memtest into your optical drive. Load optimized default again. Set XMP profile1. See what QPI/VTT is. BIOS should tell you wherever you set XMP what QPI Profile Voltage is. Mine was 1.35V.

Load optimized default again. Set Standard BIOS, Advanced BIOS, Integrated Peripherals, PC Health. Set optical drive as first boot. Set VDimm to 1.65 (or 1.66 in this case). Set memory multi to 12. Uncore to 24. Memory performance to standard. Timings to 8-8-8-24. Set QPI/VTT to what XMP's QPI Profile Voltage is. Reset. Turn off system when you get into Memtest. Turn off psu. Unplug it. Wait a bit.

Disconnect everything. Pull out your motherboard from case. Set it on mobo tray or cardboard. Remove everything from mobo. Clean off your cpu. Check for bent pins and disturbed pads on cpu. Install cpu and stock cooler. If stock cooler has no fresh paste, then clean and use new paste. Plug in cpu fan to header. Install ram. Install video card. Plug in only the optical drive. Connect your psu to motherboard. Make sure all connections are secure. Connect case wires--hdd LED power button, reset button, power LED, beeper--to mobo.

                        Plug monitor, keyboard/mouse. Power on.

Run memtest. This is a hassle. But you've already been inconvenienced. Why not see what happens.

                        I'm actually curious to see if the cpu aftermarket cooler might be the problem. I have an i7 950 system that apparently does not have a hardware issue. But I have the same weird Memtest problem that you do on that system. I have an RMA'ed kit of 12 sticks I am waiting for. And an i7 930 system that's still out of the case which I finally got working. As soon as I get the kit back, I'm going to do just this. ^^;

^ soon as I posted that bang! error... upped QPI 1 more bump, hopefully this will fix it?
