GA-870A-UD3 doesnt recognize my 1866MHz RAM and BSOD during OS install

I started building my new computer today. The first few steps were successful. I assembled it, everything turned on, it posted, i flashed latest bios, created raid with drivers from flash drive, started windows 7 install, loaded raid drivers from flash drive, 1st step of OS install was successful, machine reboots to continue install, windows logo, BSOD-restart?!?!?

Then, I notice that I cant get the bios to recognize my RAM as 1866. Max the bios lets me turn ram up to is 1600. The ram are in slots 3 and 4.
"*To reach DDR3 1866MHz or above, you must install two memory modules and install them in the DDR3_3 and DDR3_4 memory sockets."

I tried manual ram voltage and boosting cpu voltage a little. Didnt help.

Seems to be an issue with the raid drivers. I did an OS install with a single drive and it worked fine.

Id start to install windows 7 64 bit. Then it asks for driver. It will not find any drivers in the 64bit folder. Only the 32 bit folder. The 32 bit raid drivers work fine to get past the first stage of install. But it BOSD when it tries to finish the install by booting off the raid for the first time.

I'm using the latest raid drivers from gigabyte site....

It worked on the GSATA ports with the GSATA RAID drivers.

Setup found drivers in the 64bit GSATA folder, but rejected them after trying to load them. So i tried with the 32bit GSATA RAID drivers and that finally worked.

SUmmary:
Neither of the 64bit raid drivers from gigabyte web site work. The 32bit RAID drivers for the chipset dont work either.
the 32bit GSATA RAID drivers did the trick.

conclusion: yer screwed if you want to build a raid larger than 2 disks.


Now I have to figure out how to kick this ram into 1866MHz mode.

Is the RAID your boot/OS drive?

What does the RAM default to without any manual changes?
What is RAM mode when installed in slots 3 & 4 (single/dual)? I am asking as it seem they are of different color in Rev 2.1.
The max you can get from the RAM without overclocking is 1600 (200x8), however you can try and set timings to 8-8-8-21/24 instead 9-9-9-24.

Just a couple of suggestions that may help.
Look under the memory column page 10 of your motherboard manual

 Support for DDR3 1866 (O.C.) (Note 2)/1333/1066 MHz MHz memory modules
(Go to GIGABYTE's website for the latest supported memory speeds and
memory modules.)

This (O.C.) means you must overclock the cpu bus frequency which also changes all of them.(cpu frequency, memory frequency, HT Link frequency, northbridge frequency). You will need to perform some tests and it requires some mathematics to obtain the memory to be set at or around 1866Mhz.
I would suggest lowering the northbridge, and HT Link. In order to get the memory at 1866Mhz the cpu frequncy needs to be at 233Mhz The HT and NB will be to high with the auto X10 multiplier (233X10=2333) It needs to be close to 2000 so I would go with 9x233=2097 close enough. Another thing is the CPU which is the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 3.2GHz Auto cpu multiplier setting is X16 16X233=3728 OC
This may be ok if you want that much OC which depends on alot of things such as Turbo function Power Supply and cooling. If it's to high you can drop the Multiplier to X15 or X14 (14X233=3262) close enough.
Now how you can do this in BIOS settings in MB intellegent Tweaker M.I.T. try the red changes

thanx for the responses.

In auto mode, the RAM defaults to 1333 1.5v. But its 1866 1.65v RAM. This happens when the ram is configured in slots 2+4 or 3+4.

I started to realize that I would have to OC everything in order to push the RAM up to 1866. I have plenty of cooling. So i could live with 3.7GHz. Thanx for the setting suggestions, ill try them.

what is "ganged" and "unganged" mean? when my ram is in slots 3+4, do i set it to "ganged" or "unganged"? When theyre in 2+4?

When in dual channel mode, you can choose between ganged and unganged.
Ganged mean that a memory line, 64 bytes, is split between the channels, 32 from each.
In unganged mode a whole lines are fetched from each channel.

In auto mode, the RAM defaults to 1333 1.5v. But its 1866 1.65v RAM.

A AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 3.2GHz will default the memory to 1333Mhz always. It's not the memory or the motherboard that sets these frequencies the cpu reads these and initially sets them. If you want to raise the frequency you must always do it manually. No matter what type of memory or motherboard. Some AMD Phenoms or Athlons will auto at 1066Mhz, and some at 800Mhz
With a Phenom CPU their is no advantage in ganged leave it at default unganged.
One more setting I seem to have overlooked was the Dram voltage in auto it is 1.5v to get it to the manufacturers required recommendation of 1.65v you must set it manually. You can do this in BIOS settings MB Intelligent Tweaker(M.I.T.) Forget about the voltage when it is set to auto. When you change it to manual it will change to 1.5v add +0.15 to the 1.5v = 1.65v

Also please keep in mind anytime you Load optimized defaults in BIOS settings or clear the CMOS all of the manual settings will clear and go back to auto. If you changed to RAID it will need to be changed againto RAID if BIOS was cleared. If you changed any voltages or frequencies they will go back to auto as well. So when you find some happy manual settings you may want to make a record of them to eliminate some of the guess work.

thanx. I ended up with 1864s all the way through...harmonious frequencies. It all seems stable after testing with a few games.(knock on wood)
