  • Stabilize Patriot 2000 Mhz RAM and GA-P67A-UD4-B3

    Hey all -

I assembled this system last week and seem to hit a few speed bumps when booting. The chipset and BIOS are young, but I've liked what I have read in this forum - So I am going to try to tweak it.

    Here's what we've got -
    Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4-B3 with F2 BIOS
    Patriot Viper Extreme PC3-16000. 2x4GB (1.65v) in Slots 1 and 3

BIOS auto-detects it at half speed. 7-7-7-20 1T. Even with that detection, rebooting is a roll of the dice. Cold booting can also be a free ticket to an automatic reboot.

The XMP-2000 profile timing is 9-11-9-27 2T. I tried this setting and managed to boot once at 1866. I adjusted the voltage to 1.66, but I am not certain about my other voltage settings (QPI/VTT).

The good news is - If Windows boots, it is rock solid. Ironically, I burned memtest 86+ 4.2, rebooted, and couldn't get it back up at that speed.

I haven't really pushed much on the tweaking as my guessing game doesn't have a lot of experience. I am open for suggestions (including return the RAM or mobo, but I doubt that is necessary).

    Thanks!
    CK

What qpi/vtt voltage are you using? I don't think you need much on those mb's and too much causes loops

That is where I am a little uncertain. I will check when I get home I have made adjustments to qpi/vtt, but I am uncertain what sort of range I should be using when adjusting and testing.

Re: Stabilize Patriot 2000 Mhz RAM and GA-P67A-UD4-B3

I flashed F3, reset the BIOS settings and then manually entered the values
shown below. It booted. Rebooting from Windows with F1 and F2
would actually shut down the computer and then power it back up after a
few seconds of deadtime. F3 was the first BIOS that did a legit reboot.

I also ran memtest86+ for an hour at these settings. No lockups. No errors.

I tend to have the following problems:
1: Reboots are a roll of the dice. Sometimes it will shut down and switch
over to the backup BIOS (F1)

2: Keyboard is oftentimes not responsive when trying to enter BIOS, flash,
etc. Granted, it is a wireless USB keyboard. Never had problems with BIOS
access and this same set with a Gigabyte P35-DS3P.
3: It will sometimes take what seems like 20-30 seconds on the first screen
before reporting RAM timing, CPU, IDE drives, etc. Sometimes it would just
shut down and then bring it self up with the backup BIOS (F1).

Bottom line - It likes loading recovery timings for RAM when it reboots.

Your BIOSes not matching are probably causing some of your issues.

Please flash the backup BIOS to match the MAIN BIOS. To do this press ALT + F12 at startup, where you would normally press Del to enter BIOS. This can be tricky to time as it has to be done at a certain point, so keep at it as it make take you a few tries to get it to work.

And put QPI/Vtt on auto for now, it's not very likely that you will need 1.2 or even close yet
