ga-x58a-ud3r and I7 970 overclock

I just got a I& 970 and I'd like to overclock a little without changing any voltages, is this possible? I manged t get my old 920 up to 3.2 (I know, it's unlocked) with no sweat.

Any cpu should/will overclock some with out voltage increase.... Slowly increase bclk while testing untill you become unstable. Drop bclk 5mhz or untill stable again.

btw a i7-970 is not unlocked. It would say i7-970x if it was like the i7-980x and 990x cpus.

Max I can go on stock cpu voltage is 3.8ghz,you would need to set qpi/vtt voltage as stock won't be enough and if left on auto it will overvolt,I would set cpu voltage on normal setting,qpi/vtt voltage set to 1.3 or 1.315v and aim for 3.8ghz

If your using stock Intel cooler I would only clock to 3.2ghz no higher you can use same voltages as above,also manually set dram voltage according to your ram

Thanks for the quick replies! With my old 920 at 3.2 (I meant the 920 was unlocked, not the 970 btw), my temeratures were a lot higher than the 970 at 3.2 (stock). It seems the cooler works fairly well. I'll try increasing the qpi/vtt but how should I raise the clock, withe bclk? Also, although I have 1600mgz ram, I found my system more stable with my ram at 1333, is that ok?

Are you using Intel cooler? The reason it was more stable at 1333mhz was because you have to raise qpi/vtt with higher ram speed so its stable,what's that cpu's max multi? Use the highest multi x bclk to give you the cpu speed you want to clock to

I'm using the stock 970 cooler (same as the 980X). I can't seem to get the cpu much over 3.33 (the max multiplier is 25). If I raise the bclk even a little (from stock 133 to 140) it becomes unstable.

Ah that cooler is better than the bog standard Intel one,did you set cpu voltage to normal? And qpi/vtt to 1.3 to start with? Set uncore freq to twice what the memory multiplier is and add one to it

OK, I have my system stable at 3.3ghz with 1600mgz ram using the qpi/vtt at 1.3 and the unicore freq at 3200.

OK, I'm back to ocing again. I can get to 3,84ghz but it's not totally stable. With prime it bsods after a couple of hours. I have Crucial Ballistx Sport 12gb (3X4gb) ram that's rated at 1.5 volts. Is it safe to raise the voltage a bit?

I would keep dram voltage at 1.5v and add one or two clicks more qpi/vtt voltage
